Mal, I didnt know Andy served as an arbitrator in these cases. I never would have thought to contact him about a dispute with another business.
Only so far as Site Sponsors are concerned mate, as a business relationship exists...

    Mal.
Yep, Im more than happy to make sure that problems like this are fixed without a public brawl like this one has turned into.

You should always contact the other party first (remembering that not everyone is online every minute of the day), try and sort the problem between the two of you off-line but if it ends in a stalemate then please contact me via email before posting a public rant that just makes others angry.

    So...

Thats enough now kiddies, the next to take a public swipe will have to sit on the naughty step.

Everyone has blown off 1.2Bar of steam and now can we please return to talking about the grinder else risk yet another feral thread deletion.

Just another person with an opinion but Ive come to this thread to learn from the suppliers and owners about the pros and cons of the smart grinder.

We all have bad experiences with retailers but IMHO, its a bit rough to attribute lost mail to the retailer. Furthermore, as mentioned by jesterx, the retailer had in fact graciously offered a refund, al beit, taking a bit longer for it to be finalised.

This is why, in my humble opinion, this thread should about the grinder and not the personality behind it.

Now I got that off my chest I might grab myself a coffee.

Does anyone know if you need to remove the burr assembly, can it safely be done if the hopper still has beans in it?

Same thing has occurred more than once recently. Its common sense when you stop and think about it that Andy would help mediate between forum users and sponsors if required, but I  wouldnt necessarily think to contact Andy as a second last resort before posting publicly if all other avenues had failed (well maybe now, thanks Mal).  Lets  extend a certain respect to both sides and accept that problems may not always be resolved to everyones satisfaction - doesnt mean either party should suffer trial by forum.

Jesterx - I could be wrong but I actually though you can remove the hopper with the bean in it.

Yes.  If you have beans in the hopper and want to remove it, remove the lid, twist the middle plastic thing to release hopper (its labelled which way to lock/release), turn grinder upside down and tip remaining bins into the removed hopper (or bin), remove burrs, clean, vacumn etc, replace burrs, hopper, twist the middle bit to lock.  Bingo, all done, very quick and easy.

Its also shown in the manual and I think on the machine under the grinds dray.

              Cheers

Page 11 of the manual says:

The bean hopper can be removed by turning
knob anti clockwise and lifting upwards to
                pull bean hopper out.

The locking system allows you to remove
and transfer hopper without having to
                remove the beans.

When all else fails read the manual :

The many small things that they thought of on the Breville smart grinder have been making it a pleasure to use, but one thing I found odd is that they did not consider a hole/compartment/holder for the cleaning brush, so I thought I would invent my own.

The first Breville smart grinder mod!!

I got 2 small magnets, used 2 layers of black foam double sided tape (the stuff used to stick on car badges).  I used 2 layers as the handle has quite a curved recess, this way they stick and there is no gap.

I applied black insulation tape to the outside of the magnets so they dont scratch the metal.

And presto, its enough to hold the brush to the grinder body, on the sides or even the back to hide it fully.  One less thing to clutter the bench or to lose (hopefully), and its free (I had the bits already).

                        Final result:

One odd thing I noticed is that the grinds dont deposit quite centrally in the PF, they are biased towards the rear of the grinder. Are others experiencing this or is my PF not sitting in far enough on the holder?

                        Cheers

As I grind finer....the grinds move off center to the back of the PF. I removed the PF holding device and just use my hand to center and rotate the PF for a nice fill.

Well, today I tried a fresh roast and put in a measure of coffee.  The portafilter only filled less than half and no more coffee would come out.  The grinder was laboring and beans were in the hopper.  I dumped them out and took it apart only to find the slots packed with oily fines that I had to use a turkey skewer to scrape out, the brush wouldnt touch them.  I never could find the path to the exit port and I scraped out every bit I saw.  Reassembled and added more fresh beans and set the grind to the middle of esspresso.   Nothing came out and the grinder was laboring.  Then I took out the fixed teeth and reassembled and turned it on.  The noise of rattling and scrapping was horrible.  So much for my new Breville.
I have beans that I need to grind finer than usual and getting this problem now. Seems it cant grind very finely. Bugger.
Can clear mine by grinding coarsely for a while than back to fine.

Loving the magnet mod on the brush.

Ive got a couple of very small rare earth magnets sitting around after modding my bottle opener :

Might have to give this a try. Thanks.

I found the yellow zip lock type bag from ikea a perfect size.

I do while grinding and it seems to stop the build up.
