  • Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

picked up one of these today at david jones for a mere $150, now for the most part it will just be myself and the mrs using the grinder... now it does seem like a *bit* of a task to pull it out every time one of wants a coffee... i know keeping ground coffee is a huge no-no, but is it any different from buying supermarket pre-ground coffee? (also, i realise, a huge no-no).
the likelihood of buying freshly roasted beans every week and grinding them on demand for a single (or two) coffees each time is fairly slim, so any pointers as to best use this machine? is it okay to keep the beans in the container (its apparently "airtight")
or is grinding fresh the *only* way to go?

thanks guys! please be nice, first post

I used to think whole beans bought from places like GJs was very good, until I found a local shop that stocked freshly roasted beans (ie roasted less than a week prior).  Once you taste the latter, you cant go back, its like chalk and caviar.  ;D  Then I started roasting and its a whole new level of fun!!

And pre ground from supermarket, there is a reason you need to use the double floor baskets with these, it just doesnt compare to fresh beans ground on demand.

THe lid on the hopper is air tight, but the lower part isnt, although I doubt much air actually gets in there, and if you use up the beans in the hopper in a few days, I doubt its an issue, its what I do now for convenience.

Once you get into the routine, grinding on demand (even putting beans into the hopper for each cup), is nothing onerous, just becomes part of the practice and only takes a few extra seconds.  Just leave your grinder out next to the machine, its sexy!!

      Cheers

mines on the bench. keep enough beans for a few cups in it. its similar amount of work to opening a jar and spooning out coffee. bit of a wipe to clean it after and a decent clean every so often. (looks like I need to burp it as well).
I have a plunger in the office and buy freshly ground coffee for that. The taste is fairly consistent over the week.
        but for espresso, fresh ground.

so immediately ground beans are less of a necessity for plunger coffee? awesome. also i think the issue is mostly down to bench space (or lack of)... as much as id love to have the grinder on display all the time i think the kitchen may be just a little too small to accommodate an espresso machine + grinder + giant toaster + kettle

Put the giant toaster away, and only pull out when required, that is what we do!! The grinder deserves the limelight!!

If its true, its insane and I think Ill buy my next batch there...

Its ironic that one day theyre complaining of declining trade and profit and yet the next they sell stuff at well under what their cost price is. :

Perhaps if they do that with all of their stock, they wont have to stress about it all for too much longer..

If it was the BCG800 - wow, what a fantastic price.

If it was the BCG450 - oops, wrong grinder.

when i purchased this it scanned at $299.95 but i mentioned the price tag and they were happy to honor it. i think they removed the tag afterwards though!
im not sure if/how david jones do price matching, but you guys *may* have some luck mentioning this at your local store? i could probably upload a scan of the receipt if i could get my scanner working

oh and once you have tasted fresh roasted and fresh ground you will start drinking more and you will need to buy every week any how.

oh and then you will need to start home roasting...

My diagnosis is this will start a serious case of upgradeitis

I have been tossing up buying a rocky to sit beside a silvia but the Breville is getting the thumbs up in this thread, being rated by a few people as a better grinder.

It is impressive Breville do thorough testing to try to engineer their machines to last beyond 10 years, I personally would not expect a small appliance made in China to last that long these days, but would be a happy camper if it did.

Do Breville sell replacement burrs for the Smart Grinder??
Obviously if they are built to last 10 years you will need to replace them at some stage.

All good signs so far other that the initial shim set up, definately a great looking machine and a great price

Thanks Rusty, I just found that myself with a little searching.

                                1 side of a 2 part burr set :-/

Maybe they havent finished updating the spare parts on their website???

Still want to buy one but need to know that I can buy spare parts when they inevitably wear
