  • Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Got mine from myer and its as fine as i need for espresso without any shims at all. To be honest im not completely happy with this as i cant make it coarse enough for what i want in my french press, which is what i bought the grinder for (down the track anyway) For now its doing what i wanted in the short term which is do my espresso duties. For the espresso though im quite happy with the results

Have a look if there are shims installed, you could reduce them to shift your grinding range to the coarser end of the scale, ie de-shim yours, it maybe shimmed up too much.

      Cheers

"Theres something screwy around here" :

Without shims it should grind coarse with no problem.

Could be a faulty unit. Get Myer to exchange it.

Pretty disappointed they didnt come with the machine
The Smart grinder that came with the BDB I got from Cuppacoffee a week ago came with a set of shims.

I am getting a good pour with the grinder on the finest setting so I may have to shim it soon.

Can the owners of this grinder who have shimmed it let me know if they have found a scouring mark on their upper burr after a few kgs use? I have on mine and I am considering returning it.

A photo might help us identify if we have the same problem

Mine came with 3 shims from the factory, 1x1mm and 2 x .4mm the motor seems to strain the finer it is set even with no beans in the hopper, is this normal?

If its shimed too fine you might hear a metal on metal sound, which is the burrs touching, not the motor straining. This wont do any damage, but I might suggest you rip out one of those shims.

Thanks Dave, but youre about half an hour to late. I got a very loud metal on metal sound. Stopped it right away, pulled it apart and took both 0.4mm shims out. You can see the "brightness" where the burrs have touched so Id say it probably is damaged. Really quite dissapointed only had the damn thing a couple of days. So much for QC
