  • Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Mine came with shims installed already. Dave sent out shims to me anyway, so I have shims up the wazoo.
I think it originally had one thick and three thin shims, but I may be wrong. No metal on metal grind though - thats a bit odd.

Breville is kicking goals as far as Im concerned - I dont see a rep from another company offer to send shims out to people free of charge. Its fantastic service - thanks Dave Gubbin.

Ive recommended this machine to 3 others looking for machines so far, its just plain brilliant in this price range.

If its shimed too fine you might hear a metal on metal sound, which is the burrs touching, not the motor straining. This wont do any damage,
      Huh?!?

Java "If the burrs are touching then theyre damaging each other." phile

Got to agree with you Java. A quick touch of the burrs before you wind it back wont hurt anything, but running for any further length of time certainly will. Wed always suggest to run the grinder with beans before you attempt to squeeze the burrs together to check fineness.

          Hi ALL,

Just got the baby. How to know if the correct shims are in? With my Sunbeam EM6910 I have to use max-1 setting at the moment. No extra shim pack in the big box.

          Thanks!

PS. Coffee is nice now, previously had $40 sunbeam piece of technology

jberzin3, let the taste and flow dictate whether you need to tighten up the grinder.

For all others, weve made tweaks on the line to move the calibration point to the left to offer a tighter grind. But we cant go too far for fear of losing the plunger grind.

And well look at the shim in box option depending on the results of those tests.

But if anyone isnt happy with their flow and needs a shim kit, just PM me.

Thanks mate, was just wondering if the new ones come factory adjusted.
Seems all is ok, and now... back to my coffee

The most recent factory builds have been tightened to reduce the need for those shims.

As a first post (such a newbie) I thought I should jump for joy with my new grinder which I brought home today on the back of my bicycle. It was too late in the day to crank out a grind but Im looking forward to the first cup of the day tomorrow (after some dialling in of the grind etc).

Ill put in a report as well.

It would be good to somehow power the grinder from your bike to grind on the go.

I too have a new Smartie with my Dual Boiler. I did have to add one shim to get a fine grind.

Picked up the smart grinder so Im happy now hoping for better coffee!!

I dont understand what "shims" are, can anyone explain? Also, I plan on using this with the Cafe Roma that I was given for my birthday - I have been using it so far with pre-ground coffee and have not been 100% happy with the results.

I also have heard that I should be using an un-pressurised basket but I am a bit confused as to where I can get one of these - Im a bit nervous about trying to modify it myself.

The "shims" that everybody are talking about are basically similar to washers (maybe more like spacers).  They should be included in your package when you bought the grinder (its an afterthought fix by breville to fix the issue of not being able to grind fine enough out of the smart grinder).  Look up youtube to see how you should fit it.  I think seattle coffee did a youtube on it.  looks simple enough.

You mean opposed to a forethought fix?

My grinder, purchased last week, was already shimmed. Theyre coming from the factory shimmed now, I believe.

Preground would be making you 100% unhappy compared to what youll be able to get with the Smart Grinder. And yes, you definitely need to get your hands on single wall filters. Look at the below links:
                            http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1257732993
                            http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1313474042
... or do a search for "single wall filter breville", you want the one for the 800ES or BES820. Dont get the one for the BES860, as its too big for your PF. You can also get one from Pullman, or get a Krups one.
Make sure you pair your grinder with FRESH coffee beans from site sponsors, beanbay, a roaster or a local quality cafe that has a roast date on of within a week of purchase. Dont buy beans from the supermarket!

A "forethought fix" would be essentially testing the equipment realising it didnt grind fine enough and doing what they are doing now which is raising the burr closer for a finer grind in production.

Not all that uncommon in the manufacturing environment though due to pressures by Marketing/Sales on the engineers and factories to get things out on to retailers shopfloors and selling.

I bought my smart grinder and it needs the shim kit.  It seems that not all the new ones are already shimmed.

Still, at least with the passing of time the Breville customer service department know exactly what you are talking about when you ask for a shim kit.  All good.
