  • Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Picked up my BCG800 yesterday to replace my EM0450, and its doing a great job. Right from the outset I could see and feel the difference in the grind quality and consistency (at least I think I can!)
The shots with the EM0450 used to stripe a lot... for example by about the 22-25 second mark, as in about 5 seconds before Id stop the pour, when most of the pour was starting to transition to a lighter tan, there would almost always be a obvious and significant dark line in the pour, indicating some grinds had not been properly extracted.
This is considerably reduced with the BCG800.
Only problem (so far) is one that had been mentioned by a few users earlier in the thread, and that is clumping.
Im finding I get quite a lot of fairly solid, clay-like clumps coming out... more than what I did with the EM0450.
Im wondering if it just needs a few kgs under its belt to wear burrs in? How have others who noted similar clumping found things have panned out after a few weeks/months of use?

I have only had clumps of any significance when attempting to grind too fine

Agree. Its not the fault of the grinder.

            Hey guys.

Im hoping this is the right place to ask, but I needed some advice on my smart grinder. Ive had it for about 2 weeks as a combo with the DB and been using boema beans. Its been pretty good, but i need it set down on a grind size os 1 or 2 on its scale. I figured id change the combo of shims to bring that up a bit to give me a bit more adjustability (making the fatal mistake of fixing something that probably didnt need fixing). I pulled it apart, cleaned it up and removed the burs. The shim it came with was a single 0.5mm shim, which I removed and put in the 0.4 and 1.0 shims, replaced it all and went back to grinding. Afterwards even on the finest setting i couldnt get the grind fine enough for espresso (worse than before). I figured id go back to the original shim to see if i could get back to previous performance. Of course I could not. Ive tried going up to 1.8mm of shims but still not fine enough it would seem.

Any suggestions? Anyone had similar problems with the kit?

            Thanks

            Jamie

I am in the very same predicament. I am not game to use greater than the 1.4mm maximum recommended in case the burrs come into contact?

                  Thanks Lenny

I guess my only concern there is lack of thread left on the spindle. I might need to take out the lock washer to use a bit more of it.

any theories as to why the initial 0.5mm shim was grinding finer before the reinstall? I thought maybe the initial nut wasnt tightened properly perhaps, we arent talking about much tolerance here i guess. But i dont remember it being loose.

2.0 mm of shims in and its now looking good. Chocked the DB on finest, its looking happy around setting 5! I did have to take the spring washer out to get some thread though. Ill have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt loosen over time.

I accidently left the spring washer off and it loosened and came off during a grind

The instructions say to leave out the normal flatwasher but to use the spring washer.

Saw a car with the number plate "BCG-800" today. Tried to get a photo of the plate but couldnt, shame.
Was a classic, I got a bit too excited.
