Theyre some very hard Kenyan beans roasted to the end of first crack for filter, and the grinder just couldnt handle them. It made an awful noise like grinding gears on a car. Scary stuff.
Ive also had this problem with a light roast. Had to take things apart to get the beans clear before it would go again. Annoying, but it might just mean this thing isnt a complete powerhouse, and its suited for espresso only as you say.

Relieved to hear its not just me.
Anyone know if this is likely to cause long-term problems with the motor?
Had a few days adjusting my new BCG800 for my setup, quite a step up from my old cheap hand grinder Ill say!
No shims needed, grinds very fine and very clumpy on the finest setting, which blocks up my Cafe Roma good and proper!
Have found a setting that pulls ~60mL from my dodged up unpressurised basket in 30s, now to work on dose and tamp with my new properly fitting steel tamp from CosmoreX!
Shims arrived yesterday - thanks to Phil and team for the quick response.
2 shims made no discernible difference, but 4 now gives me 30ml in 30 seconds from my 6910.
Thats on the finest setting, whereas the EM480 did the same 5 clicks in from the end, so I guess that I will have to ask Phil for more shims :-(
However, the dome nut is now a bugger to put back on due to the reduced amount of thread left to grip ( I am not looking forward to the usual weekly clean!), and I will have to take off the spring washer if I fit any more shims.
Has anyone left it off, and were there problems, please?
Apart from that, its a fine piece of kit, and a significant step up in convenience from the 480.
Chris
Thanks, all.
Considering that I write fairly complex Technical Mauals for a living, I am a bugger at reading those of others :-(
Flat washer now out, but no change - as one would expect since the shims push up the burrs.
Will email Phil for some more shims tomorrow.
Cheers
So i use my smart grinder to grind for my morning aeropress at work and espresso shots at home.
My question is, given the range of the smart grinder from fliter/plunger all the way to espresso grinds, how much grinds do you have to toss out of the first part of the grind when switching grind settings to ensure that the grinds you are getting are consistent at the setting youve set it at?
