I would suggest that the reason you need the burrs to rub to get an OK grind is because the forces required to grind the beans are forcing the burrs apart while grinding (plastic mounting design??), but when there are no beans inbetween the burrs they close up again.
This is the reason Phil suggested. However mgrobins has noted that he has one BCG800 that doesnt rub and still grinds appropriately fine enough. This suggests that not all BCG800s have this characteristic, which means either the one that rubs hasnt been built properly or the one that doesnt rub hasnt been built properly. I would suggest the one that rubs hasnt been built properly.

I cant see or hear any evidence of my burrs rubbing in my factory set-up 1149. As Im always swapping between beans and grind by weight the machine is always run empty at the end of each grind. The grind is normally at its 2 - 3 finest setting but I have been finer and plugged the BES900 resulting in a 90 second time-out and mud.

        Wanna swap with mine?

See - thats what were talking about. Some BCG800s grind properly without burrs rubbing, and some dont. For the ones that rub, Breville should exchange them for ones that dont - simple.

A different question, though still on the topic of grinder adjustment. To adjust finer or coarser i can turn the dial 2 clicks before getting a visible shift to the next marker on the linear scale. Reason for asking- i have been adjusting until the linear scale moves a notch - but have noticed a large difference in grind - is the dial click halfway?? Fnq

Each click on the adjustment knob = a change, the display has 2-3 clicks between each marker. Sometimes annoying, but once you get the grind close, you dont really need to look at the display at all.

                Hi guys,

I need some help with my Smart Grinder... The button to adjust the dosage popped out last night and I couldnt lock it back it place for the life of me

The functionality of the dosage wasnt impaired but the button is now wedged in place with a piece of cardboard paper. Any ideas?

                Thanks

as from above, having a look at those burrs spin, they are definately unaligned and definately need to be replaced. Its totally unacceptable for the place u bought it from to not accept a return on it..

The item is clearly faulty and must be replaced.

How are ppl here cleaning there grinder ? I just pulled hopper out and stored beans, pulled the outer part of the grinder out, brushed it all out, ran it without beans to clean it through, tapped the machine to get all the excess dust out, more brushing and some blowing and seems good....

Anything else i should be doing or focusing on ?

Page 17 of the manual gives the correct steps for cleaning - you seem to be missing step 4 :

Coffee oil turns rancid rather quickly and spoils the taste. I clean mine daily. It only takes a few minutes to protect whats in the cup 8-)

Seems to be some bad BCG800s out there :-?. Looking to buy my 1st grinder to go with my $50 from evil-bay 800ES (yeah, I know, Ill upgrade one day). Should I go the BCG800 or the more tried and tested EM0480? :-/

I would get the Breville, its much less messy, has more features to make it very usable and has 2 years warranty.

                                Cheers
