  • Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Try 14 grams Maxey in the single walled single filter.  If you cant get 14 grams in I would say that you have your grind way too coarse.

Weigh only the beans, not the filter basket.

Maxey sounds like you might have to contact Breville for the shim kit, a lot of people have to so dont think you are doing anything wrong. They are really quick at getting them out.

              Lemoo , Shapeshifter,
Thanks I just had a win this morning used some new St Ali beans in the double pf with 18grams ground and 10 sec pre total 40 sec some mud on max grind 25 so backed off to 24 grind 35 sec no mud seems ok tastes ok so changing the pre setting and the beans might have fixed the problem should i still install the shim kit (ordered today)or leave the BSG alone? :

Suggest you put the shim kit in unless you intend only to drink those beans forever.
I find I change my grinder coarser for just freshly roasted up to 7 days beans and finer after 2 weeks. Different beans may also require different settings too.
But I suppose it isnt urgent now that you have your grinder working on the beans you have. So change them when you have time.

I had to install a shim kit after a few months of use once the burs wore in. I couldnt go fine enough anymore.

Measured existing shim height with verneer calipers at 1.8mm (1 x 1mm & 2 x 0.4mm) added another 0.4mm to take it to 2.2mm in total. The grind was fine enough but I was at the upper end of the espresso range. I could have gone so fine that I would have choked the grinder let alone the coffee machine! ;D

I ended up taking it appart again and using 2 x 1.0mm shims. This landed me about 2/3 into the espresso range for a 60ml double shot in approx 30secs (1 week old Campos Superior beans). For what its worth, this is about where I started when the grinder was new.

Never had any issues with burs touching even when the hopper is empty.

Its super easy. Breville include very clear and simple printed instructions with the shim kit.

Would be grateful if anyone can tell me what grind setting I should have my BCG 800 on for Pour Over.
I realize that it may depend on the bean freshness etc but what is the average setting for most? This is a new brewing method for me and I tried it today and feel that the grind was possibly too fine.

Just ring Breville Customer Service and tell them you have a smart grinder and you need the shim kit.

They will know what you mean. At least they did when I rang.
