  • Boo. I did the shims and they were still too rough.

In fact. I have used all the shims and it still did not look like it has gone finer. Am I missing something?

There is no problem to add a few more shims. I trust you are installing them in the correct location..... ie under the bottom burr.

Call customer service & they can send you an additional set.

      • Hi everyone, just purchased a BES900 + SG for $1250 from Harvey Norman in Moorabbin, Victoria. Will report on my findings with the grinder very soon as both of them have just been delivered to Harvey Norman so let's see if it needs any shims!

Edit: Okay, today just picked up the BES900 only because HN told me they will be getting the SG in few days so compensate for the delay, they gave me a Breville knocking bin Can't wait to get my hands on the grinder!

        • yes, installed in the correct place, but can't add anymore shims as I am running out of threads to be able to screw on the top burr.

          • I have a Rocky grinder, and about to update my Silvia v1 to a Breville BES900. Question is whether to stick with the Rocky, or get a BCG800 smart grinder in the package.

Would I find the Smart Grinder to be a step down from the Rocky? There is something about getting the combo that appeals to me (and to sell the Rocky and Silvia as a set).

            Any thoughts appreciated.

            • Lol. People seem to want to upgrade their SG to a rocky for its ability to produce finer grind. It may seem counter intuitive to downgrade now to need to upgrade again next time?

              • ^ thanks for the feedback. Yes, have seen some of the "I upgraded from the SG to the Rocky" type posts.

The SG looks like it now has been upgraded to produce a more fine grind (without shims), and also seems to have more functionality. I guess that's what attracts me.

Anyway, keen on more options - is this a step backwards? (Rocky to SG)

                • suspect it is, doubt its a step up (I have a smart grinder). compak k3 is probably the way up.

Is this download working for anyone else? It just keeps making me enter the captcha code over and over without allowing me to download the pdf???

Thanks for posting the receipt though!!!!

                      • Got my shims the other day 4 in total and they worked a treat. Ended up using 1 thick & 2 thin shims and it brought the the digital indicator from the very far right if the panel to just under the "e" and is now producing a very fine grind for my machine.

                        • I understand that you only need shims on the older versions of this - is that right? Ie: out of the box, the new grinders produce fine enough grinds.

                          • I checked my batch number and it falls into the current range that (apparently) does not need the shims... but it isn't grinding fine enough! Using the single basket in my BES900 I'm 3 "notches" from the end and when I try the double basket I need to go all the way to the finest setting and I still don't get a decent 30 second pour.

So has anyone else with a recent batch number gone ahead and installed the shims? Did they need to argue with Breville to get them (as Breville seems to think newer models don't need the shims)?

                            • Has anyone else the problem of not getting coffee beans down to the grinding parts? Motor and burr cone working ok, no click sounds, but no coffee coming through.
Taking it apart and reassembling it makes it work again; for a few seconds or minutes..
I am using maragogype beans - maybe they are too big for this grinder?

(Another problem, I have had the grinder on the coarsest espresso setting but still had to tamp VERY lighly or the coffee machine would choke.)

Have to be a good chance that it's those beans. Easy way to find out.
