forget what it says on the dial, just grind what works. it depends on what shims you have in it. mine's set so I grind Andy's beans at the coarse end of espresso. others I need to grind finer.

    • Hi,
I have had my SmartGinder for about 15 months. About 4 weeks ago the burrs started to slip. Not sure if was getting stuck on the new coffee. I cleaned everything out including the shims and put it back together. All good, perfect again. I changed coffees a few times and 3 days ago went back to the previous one. This morning it started slipping again. So once more I disassembled and cleaned. But this time, the teethed plate under the conical burr came out and with it, a piece of shredded, what looks and feels like soft felt, possibly it was a ring shape. Anyway I put it all back together and it is working just fine again, but I want to know what that felt was and do I need to replace it.

doesn't matter, it is not grinding, off to breville and a leaking water tank on the BES900 can come along for the ride....

        • Hi everyone,

Just wondering if someone could offer any suggestions to an issue of my SG....

lately, the grinder is no longer grinding in correct dosage (eg set it to produce 3 shots, but only 1 shot's worth of grinds comes out), and regardless of which level I set it to, it only produce really fine grinds, choking my espresso machine.

I had taken it apart and cleaned every part as best I could, but it didn't made any difference, and I have noticed then one shim has already been installed underneath the burr.

anyone encountered this issue before? I guess the most obvious port of call would be Breville, but my SG is already out of warranty.......

any help/suggestions would be much appreciated.

          regards,

          Leslie

          • Leslie. Doesn't sound good. Maybe contact Breville anyway. I imagine you done the obvious things. One thing I'd do is try and adjust the grind while its grinding. And remove the shim that's there to see if it makes a difference. If you're grinding 3 you don't have the porta filter holder in. Try with it in?
Or hit it with a bigger hammer.

            • Hi Richard,

              thanks for the reply

yeah I did the obvious things I could think of, take all the bits out, cleaned them up, and made sure I putted them back the right order/way (did I missed anything?)

I will try the things you have suggested, failing that, I would hit up Breville on Monday.

              thanks again

              • Dear fellow members,

This grinder is now dispatched from Breville with an upgrade modification to fix the grind size problem discussed in this thread.

Therefore, you should not require a shim kit IF your Smart Grinder model has a PDC (Product Development Code) number of 1102, or higher.
You will find the PDC stamped on the bottom of the Smart Grinder's base.

In my non-professional opinion, the Smart Grinder is the best grinder on the market globally at its price point, PERIOD!
When i am in Italy coffee professionals i deal with want one of these babies too (for home use only) , and i mean WANT ONE BAD!!!

My only wish for this grinder is that some day Breville make it with a 'numbered' grind setting on the display for those of us who regularly change the bean type (e.g ethiopian yirgacheffe, brazilian santos, hawaiian kona, etc.. ) in the hopper therefore require a way to accurately record the dialled setting for each bean type.

FYI, No i do not work for Breville.

First post and without so much as a how do you do launches into a rap extolling the virtues of a product, at least it's a sponsors grinder.

                  Then this bit of gibberish,
"My only wish for this grinder is that some day Breville make it with a 'numbered' grind setting on the display for those of us who regularly change the bean type (e.g ethiopian yirgacheffe, brazilian santos, hawaiian kona, etc.. ) in the hopper therefore require a way to accurately record the dialled setting for each bean type"

                  Gives a person pause.

                  • my grinder has a product code beginning with 12 and yet it still required shimming.

also, i'm no coffee expert, but these days i can usually dial a new bean in in 3-4 goes. if its a bean i've used before, i generally remember roughly where the start point was and can get it within maybe 2-3 goes. even if i use the same beans for 2 consecutive orders, it doesn't guarantee the start point will be the same for both either.

i agree the BSG is a great little domestic grinder but the other points aren't very accurate.

                        • just a quick update for anyone that cares

turns out my grinder is still within warranty (I thought it has a 12 months warranty, turns out to be 24) but only by a few days, it is now in the hands of the local Breville repair rep, will keep you gals/guys updated.

                          • Hi. I got this grinder about 6 months ago.
I use the finest grind setting, and usually pull a shot with unpressurised basket on my EM6910. However, this past week, I failed to get decent shots that way (indicator showed the pressure's too low) and no crema. The only way to get shots as good as before, is by using the pressurised basket.
I get the beans from Anomali Coffee (a local coffee roaster, as I live in Jakarta), bought 2 days after it was roasted.

My question is, is shimming still required with the recent BCG800s?
If it is, where in Sydney can I get the shim kit? (Since my sister lives there)

                            Thanks in advance.

                            • I think you can still get shim kits. I have had a BCG800 for about 5 months with the batch code 1303. I have had no troubles with it. I usually have my grinder set to the second "s" under the word espresso on the LCD, although I do adjust it up a few notches if I am grinding a less dense bean. For example Monsoon Malabar Gold. You can always try ordering the shim kit.

                              • Whoops. Forgot to mention you get the shim kit directly from breville. They will post it to you directly.
