  • Looks like you can add my BCG800 to the list of broken grinders... Has anyone actually spoken with breville or heard anything Phil McKnight?, as this seems to be a pretty common manufacturing fault...

I ended up upgrading to a Mazzer Mini, but would like to have this as either a spare machine or fixed to onsell it

At under $300 the Breville is pretty much in the throw away appliance category, if its out of warranty don't bother fixing it.

The Mazzer on the other hand is built like a tank, and in a different class altogether, look after it and it will last for ever.

yeah true, however if no one pulls em up on shitty manufacturing, it'll never change. Although it does look like they did make some improvements on the new model, I'd expect at least more than 2-3 years out of it or at least access to the spare parts to DIY.

I've already have the BDB fixed due to collar faults.

Really happy with the dual boiler and have been producing great coffee with it and the grinder (shim kit fitted)

What are others doing ? Buying another one or getting a more commercial grinder .Any suggestions ? (Noise is a consideration for me with young kids )

          Cheers !

Sadly I am facing the same issue with mine. Although I have had the misfortune of misplacing my receipt - bought in Sept of 2013 so still within warranty which makes it hurt more. What did you end up going with? Anyone found a way of fixing economically this yet?

          • Same boat here. I have BCG800 just under two years old which has just started slowing down, jamming and making the ratatat/clicking noise.

Was told by Breville to contact a service agent, who told me there are only grinding and hopper parts available - nothing for the motor or gear mechanism.

            • Mine did this at about the 22 month point, breville replaced it with a new one.

              • Update - my BCG800 (which was actually 23 months old) has been replaced under warranty. Credit where it's due to Breville customer service. They were responsive and helpful by phone and email.

I now have a BCG820, and a new problem with the grind not being fine enough..... Will comment on that over at the BCG820 forum.

No I didn't keep the shim kit - and now I'm kicking myself !! To be honest, I didn't think of it - and besides, I didn't think I'd need it. When they released the BCG820, KatBrazier from Breville was quoted on this site as saying "no more shim kits"....

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that this 820 that I got as a replacement for the 800 will just be a fill-in machine while I make plans to upgrade. Based on what I've read here and elsewhere, a K3 is looking good...

                    • Just got this grinder a weeks ago and love it. Have it paired with the BES920 dual boiler and works a treat.

                      • I was using up my BCG 800 when it turns out there is a very small stone among the beans. I stopped it immediately and cleaned it (the upper and lower burr) but it hasn't been working. It just made a rackety noise followed by a whirring sound.

How can I open it further to see if a piece of the stone is still in the unit?

I'm based in Jakarta so there is no service centre I can bring it to.

**WARNING** ensure your grinder is NOT connected to a power source.

Here is a copy of the manual for you to read before considering "surgery"

I am also confident others will come along and give you assistance.
I myself have opened this machine up (under supervision).
                          Grinder still works!
                          Good Luck

I have tried to clean it as much as I can according to the manual. Still no love

So did you start from the four screws at the bottom of the unit? I can't see any other screws other than those ones

                              • I got one of these 4 months ago 2nd hand. Was 2 years old already. Not sure if shim kit is installed or not as haven't checked.

Problem I have is clumping. Mostly on the higher grind settings to use for my double shot on EM6910 basket.
The Breville people keep saying its damp - my coffee was too new when I put it in there which I feel is not true.
Anyone know exactly why it might clump and if possible to fix?
