  • Re: Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder

Any chance of running it against a cheap grinder for comparison ie sunbeam 450? This would give us really useful benchmark.

I understand you probably dont have one sitting in the back room but I can but ask!!

I have a thing about Sunbeam, and as far as I know, they have no real interest in product development. Besides, the truth of the matter is that these tests take more than an hour of my time, which could be spent doing things that keep me in business...so probably not.

I was just looking for a cheap grinder comparison and was using the sunbeam as an example. I understand your time is valuable just thought it would be good to see on the scale a comparison with a grinder on the bottom end of the scale as well as the top end with the BNZ.

Fair enough. The answer is still no. There are too many other grinders on my hit list.

Just purchased the Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder before I left for holidays to Adelaide (would have been nice to pack it in the suit case, but my wife over-ruled and put Christmas presents in there instead). Have been very, very happy with it in the short amount of time Ive used it...still have lots and lots of playing to do with it, but so far Im extremely happy with it.

It provides a really consistent grind and my lattes are generally also of a higher standard now!

Now to upgrade the Espresso machine...oh what to get, what to get!? So many choices ;D

Quick question.. so are you guys saying that for those of us considering an upgrade to a Rocky shouldnt bother, but to get this one instead?

The Rocky has stood the test of time and has earned its rep as a quality grinder that will last, we can only speculate about the Breville BCG800.

I am probably not one of the guys you were asking but thats how I see it.

For a little more $ you can certainly get a real upgrade from the Rocky.

Agree with your comments ryjodal, though if my budget was no more than $500, Id buy the Breville over a Rocky doserless (I dont like the doser model at all). The Rocky is however much noisier and doesnt have the features of the Breville.

If I had a maximum budget of $600, Id opt for the K3T without hesitation, and should get some change out of that.

Being an early adopter has some risk and it seems likely that other grinders will have the advanced electronic controls fitted in the next few years if the Breville is successful.

It is also likely that if you wait a few years that even Breville will come up with something better.

But how long do want to wait?

After all you cant take the money to save with you when you die

Certainly it looks very good if you adjust your griding settings often.

I think theres more to the Breville than the electronic control alone though. The Burr-Set looks to be a pretty decently manufactured component.

More than likely, it will come down to the mechanical integrity of key components as having the most effect on longevity, such as the gear-set, bearings and what have you. We wont know anything about this side of things for quite some time I would imagine; which is probably a good thing for those people buying one....

                        Mal.

I am getting my economist crystal ball and suggesting if the electronic control is popular that the heavy commercial grinder manufactures will adopt the technology as well.

Or ids the breville just as good as a European made girder.

Is it the quality made in China product that everybody who has a mortgage has dreamt about?

I have a Canon digital SLR camera that is made in China so they can make stuff as good as anybody if the people running the factory want to.

They have been doing so for quite some time...

Mazzer, Macap, Compak, Mahlkonig et al all have timed doserless grinders

What sort of motor is in the BCG800? Is it an induction motor, or carbon brush/commutator? That would certainly affect longevity.

Just curious - I dont plan on changing anytime soon, having just upgraded from a BCG450.
