    Re: Sunbeam EM0450 Coarse Grind

Old post dig but I had this exact problem today and solved it. Noone has really explained the solution.

When you take these apart to clean them and then reassemble its easy to mess up steps 8 and 9 in the manual. When you put the adjustment collar back on it is important to line up the two markers, but then do nothing else. This is when you put the top burr in (also lining up those markers).

Then, and only then, you turn the adjustment collar clockwise.

Its very easy to mistakenly pop the adjustment collar on and instinctively turn it at this point (before you put the burr in), but if you do the top burr wont go in correctly. But (just to confuse you) the top burr will go in incorrectly (with the markers not lined up) and it will appear like its all good to go.

The easy way to test. If you can lift the top burr back out when you have the grinder adjusted right, you have installed it incorrectly. Go back and start again. Collar, burr, then turn collar.

I dont think they know them as a shim kit, I called a while ago and just told them about the issue and they sent me out washers immediately.

    Good luck ,

I was having problems with a coarse grind on a 480 sunbeam. I tried the fix using home made plastic shims. Works fine (pun intended) now. I noticed that when I had the machine apart that some broken beans were blocking the entry path and also that the area under bottom burr needed a clean. Have you checked that these pathways are clear?

Assuming its a 0450 as per the thread title, its been put back together wrong.

How far apart did you pull it for cleaning?
Did you line up the arrows on the top burr holder with the body when you put it back together?

I didnt mean any offense, however as the grind was too fine at the outset, and following your intervention is now too coarse, unless Im missing something.... :-/

Well its not much different to an EM0480 which I know well, there was no resistance, everything fit together smoothly and easily, but the grind was the issue. There was certainly no cross threading. Its as if the burrs are spaced either too far or too close with no in-between "sweet spot."

On about 15, it grinds finely but sporadically - nothing comes out unless you bang it.
Any finer setting - nothing comes out.
It was set way too fine and this has compacted coffee grinds between the burrs and probably in the exit pathway as well.

We took it apart and cleaned it and reassembled it (several times), and now it grinds terribly coarsely on every setting with no change
You havent done it correctly, probably cross threaded. The burrs should have screwed together effortlessly - any resistance is either due to coffee in the thread, or cross-threading (not good).

I have recommended he take it back to the shop (Harvey Norman) to exchange as it seems that the burrs are all out of whack.
Might have been best to provide this advice at the outset. Fortunately, the staff at Harvey Norman are likely to know less about the grinder than yourselves, so you just might get away with it! ;D

My mate is having a similar problem (fresh Campos beans, Gaggia Baby machine).

My brother in law has the same grinder with no problem, and Ive had an em0480 for 4 years with no hassles either.
I have recommended he take it back to the shop (Harvey Norman) to exchange as it seems that the burrs are all out of whack. Its 3 months old and he has the receipt.
Any other ideas before he does this?

Thanks TG. I havent had it apart yet - thought it best not to until I had an idea of how others had adjusted it.

My em0450 works a treat, but grinds espresso-grade on 20. That doesnt leave much latitude for a coarser grind to suit the work plunger. Has anyone tweaked theirs to open the burrs slightly? (Im a bit worried Ill stuff it up completely and get nothing out of it.)

If the cause in not putting it back together properly, Id be looking to see if there are some shims you can remove.

I guess for the love of coffee Ill put them aside Smiley
I gonna go out on a limb here and guess hat they are not the highest quality beans - put them aside in the bin and be done with them.

I have a sunbeam EM5900, so my next move will be unpressurised baskets.
As for the fresh beans, i was given 2kgs of coffee beans when I bought the unit.

Maybe I need to get a UN-pressurised basket
Un-pressurised basket and fresh beans (as AM alluded to) would be a good move.  What machine do you have?  I can recommend taking GregWormald up on his very generous offer of free basket modification (for Breville/Sunbeam baskets).  I did this with the stock basket from my Breville Ikon and am more than happy with the results.

Once you have unpressurised basket and good fresh beans, its a case of tweaking your process until you get to the point that it works for you on a consistent basis... a bit of good old trial and error!
