I concur with Fio, the burrs are likely past it.

Blades may be worn, if its 2nd hand its probably a few years old anyway so changing the blades would be a good idea.
They are not that expensive and easy to change.
A few months back I thought my blades still had life in them until I changed the blades and it was like a new machine. The differance was night/day and you could really smell the perfume after that.

    hi all

finally got round to getting some teflon lube on the burr carrier threads

    good news

the burr carrier screws down till the burrs touch!

    bad news

the grind is still way too course

please help friends? what are possible problems?
(im thinking the burrs are too blunt, but would like to eliminate other possibilities before forking out for new ones)

Sorry for the slow reply. Been on the run the last few days.

Cross threading happens when the threads on the one part, isnt lined up with the threads from the other part, and then tightened/screwed in... damaging the threads. If this is the case, the treads just needs to be repaired by cleaning the threads with a cutter. Dont force the "top burr carrier" if its not turning freely. No lube on earth will work if this is indeed the case. The machine casing on my grinder is made of brass, and the top burr carrier aluminium. It is also possible there may be some oxides on the threads... but it will need to be quite bad, to grind the burr carrier to a halt.

Whatever the case, it should be fixable. You should be able to adjust the grinder so that the burrs touch. As Fiorello mentioned.
I have had my grinder 9 years, and I still love it. A year ago I bought a new maz mini after a bad bout of upgraditis as a replacement... I still have it unpacked in its box on the pantry shelf!

you should be able to tighten the top burr until it touches the bottom burr. if they touch, you will know about it (noise)

Re: ECM BEST problem - not grinding fine enough

    Hi vorax

i do indeed have the rebadged anfim best aka ecm best

im not really sure what cross threading is - will a picture help?
also the burrs arent super sharp but I think are in useable condition

I do think the problem at the moment is that I cant screw in the top burr carrier far down enough - its too tight! Should i be able to get the burrs to touch?

Ive given the threads a good clean, but havent had time to grab some lubricant yet, but hopefully that will help. any other thoughts?

thanks to everyone for the advice so far!

Do you have the Ecm badged version made by Anfim? If you dont disregard my comments. I have a great deal of experience with the anfim version. I dont know much about other Ecms grinders or whether there are any others.

How are the threads on the inside of the grind "chamber"/main casing/ Are there any indications of cross threading? How are your burrs looking? You should be able to adjust your grind almost to dust without issue. This is very simple but very solid/reliable grinder.

Im merely presenting this as an alternative as I prefer to use food grade lubricants where possible, Inox MX6 silicone grease is available at Jaycar and works a treat applied sparingly. Its not as slippery as the teflon stuff but for threads that are slightly worn already this is often a good thing.

Yep you can use dry Teflon lube on any grinder with a big metal screw thread adjustment collar.

Best way to clean threads is to take the top burr and carrier out, then get to the thread with a toothbrush or other plastic bristled brush of some sort. Use some mild diluted detergent or diluted cafetto type solution if its really cursed badly. Just make sure you dry it all super thoroughly before grinding with it again.

Ive got a theory what the problem is.  Ive noticed that the grind adjustment collar is quite hard to tighten,
    Theres your answer iggs,

Sounds like the previous owner did an incomplete clean.

Pull it to bits and clean the threads of the collar and grinder body until they are spotless. You can use a little dry teflon lube if required when it all goes back together.
Sorry to hijack this, but its a quick and similar question. Can I use this teflon lube on a K3T also?

ECM BEST problem - not grinding fine enough

    Hi CSers

I recently picked up an ECM Best grinder second hand and cant get it to grind fine enough!!

What are the possible causes for this?

Ive got a theory what the problem is. Ive noticed that the grind adjustment collar is quite hard to tighten, and at one point whilst trying to get it down to a finer grind - it got completely stuck! (had to turn it with both hands very forcefully to get it unstuck). not sure why its so hard to adjust though?

any help would be much appreciated guys! I was so excited to try it out but just getting big granules of coffee so far instead of beautifully fine ground coffee. sigh
Working...
