Hi,
I posted to another thread here regarding the 0480.
I was able to get a reasonably fine grind while in Canberra, but when I moved to the coast, I had to drop is about 6 notches and nearly ran out of adjustment. On return to Canberra, back again 6 notches to where it was. I think its the humidity.
Anyway after upgrading grinders, I realised that I was asking too much of the 0480 to produce a grind fine enough for Mrs Sylvia.
I think the 0480 produces mixed sizes with lots of powder when you try to push it too far, and that clogs up the extraction. It is a bit of a juggle to get it fine enough without taking too long to extract.
Yes the static is also an issue, and perhaps removing the spout would help if it could be done, the grinds to fall out cleaner. Good idea.

Sunbeam em 0480
Mine never came with removable spout, only fixed.Originally posted by MrJack View PostI got rid of the removable plastic spout on mine, and fashioned a funnel from a plastic disposable cup which just sits on the basket. Much, much cleaner that way. Less static also.

I have a thread with photos at http://coffeesnobs.com.au/brewing-eq...w-machine.html - I had some issues with my em0480 and I also have a virtually identical EM0450. Note the upper burrs have a flat spot which can be used to line the upper burr up when you are reassembling the machine.
Remove the upper burr carrier and turn it over - the OUTSIDE edge of the metal section has a flat spot. When you place the upper burr back in the rotating selector part, that flat spot goes almost directly above the arrow/line at the back of the rotating selector where the button is.
That thread on the bottom of the burr carrier is a part of the selection mechanism, NOT part of the burr seating. Once you begin to turn the selector the upper burr is engaged in the selector and you can't remove it.
Let me know if that doesn't make sense - look at the photos over in my thread.
EDIT: Oh crap, done it again. Posted in a thread started months ago... le sigh...

My biggest problem with this grinder is trying to get the ground coffee where I want it to go. Don't know if is static electricty with all the plastic in it but 50% seems to end up on the bench.

I've had my Em0480 for just under 7 years. I bought it when the em6910 first came out, from the factory outlet in Botany. I have never had any issues - however, 2 more units purchased for my family did have grind setting issues straight out of the box, never able to obtain a fine enough grind setting. Seems the QC was a bit crap in China that day...
The secret is the shim. you need to use a feeler gauge to set the burrs to clearance at least .001" on the 0 setting with the shims in place and nut torqued, then you are away.
regular cleaning is essential. the sweeper design and chute is not the best.

My 3 year old em0480 came with 4 shim. To fix the fine setting, I took them all out and replaced them with a metal washer. This washer is about 6.5 shim in thickness, it solved my fine grind setting. At "0" I got nothing, at "2" I got ultra fine powder, now I am using "18" for espresso, which is fine with me because I don't do coarse with it ....

Additional source of information on this grinder. The shim sets are now available via ebay for $1 plus $0.60 postage (search for 'Sunbeam shim'). Saves dealing with Sunbeam.

Re: SUNBEAM EM 0480
A closeup pic showing the alignments. I had 2 of these grinders side by side. This one still had the arrows visible, the other did not. Both aligned the same.
Notice the two bits that jut out in the centre at 12 and 6 o'clock. The top one in both cases aligns on the left side of the letter m in remove.
So if the arrows have faded try that. You have 2 possible alignments so try both. On the one that has faded I have used a knife to mark this alignment on both the inner and outer.

Re: SUNBEAM EM 0480
Apologies to those who PMed me requesting a photo, life has been busy.
Grinder spat out a chunk of plastic a few days ago and I have had to use a mortar and pestle and a plunger for my caffeine hits.
Seems only fair I take a few pics before I throw it away. New grinder is ordered, awaiting delivery.
I have given my parents and my inlaws one of these grinders plus a sunbeam em5900. Both acquired via ebay/gumtree for a pittance, both ensure I get good coffee when visiting. Happily recommend this grinder, it's a basic burr grinder but perfectly capable when paired with a similar coffee machine. Until it died it easily choked up my em6910.

There is a nice video on cleaning and assembly on youtube that describes the reassembly process quite nicely, and with a 'Strylian accent too.
The arrows on the outside of the case are pretty durable, but the inside markings disappear shortly after you unpack it. Makes you wonder what you are drinking, really, if it dissolves ink...
I have three of these grinders, one in the Town House, one on The Estate and one in the dower house where the mater lives. We have two La Pavoni Professionals for the children and a Sunbeam shiny machine for the ole lady because the Pavonis require more operational nouse.
The only problems I have had in a total of 10 operational years is that one of then stripped the blades off the expeller (the little propellor under the burr that chucks the grinds out the spout.) The part is about 25 bucks plus whatever the service guy charges as a flag fall. Next time I am buying the bit from these guys and replacing it myself. I reckon that for $60 plus driving time x 2 it is worth a shot. And if it does not work I have wasted the 25 bucks and have the humiliation of taking the bag of bits to the shop for repair.
Proper and regular cleaning is the key, I believe. The machine is a bargain. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise.

I actually registered to say YES!!! thank you for your help!!Originally posted by shavey View PostAny luck with that photo please as I too am in the same boat with the top arrow disappearing quite some time ago.
I was almost about to throw my grinder against the wall, but this user is right...
To reassemble, first position the collar so that the two arrows on the outside of the body line up. Then place the top burr into the collar with the inside markers aligned. Press and hold the lock/release button on the side and turn the collar clockwise until it engages with the numbered adjustment mechanism
You have to align the bottom arrow... for the bottom burr THEN immediately place the top burr in as well and align itself to its own arrow... THEN turn to the setting you want!
If you align the bottom arrow THEN turn the bottom burr, it simply wont work! ( I tried it 5 times... that's why I came on here)
my Sunbeam was given to me because the people could not do the beans right... I can see why now!!
I feel like a visual instruction set would be useful

Any luck with that photo please as I too am in the same boat with the top arrow disappearing quite some time ago.Originally posted by DrSmurto View PostMutley - is the grinder new? If so the arrows should be very visible on the side of the inner basket and the other on the outer collar. If not, Ill try to remember to take a photo of mine so you know how to align them.

I must admit I just leave mine on 10 and change the tamping pressure.
You cant make things fool proof fools are so ingenuous.

I find that I alternate between 8-10 depending on what beans I am using at the time... I have come across a few situations where I wish there was a half-step with one setting being too fine and the next being too course. But for the most part it's great. I am also starting to pine for something a little better but it has and continues to do a great job.
