It's only 3 days since it happened to me, this afternoon I recieved a free bag of beans in the mail and an apology along with the explanation that the product being what it is
these things happen sometimes regardless of how carefull you are, apart from having to dial in the grind setting again I don't see any damage, maybe the burrs are a little bit more blunt, hard to measure.

I have found several small stones over the years which have arrived in green beans. It is a hazard you need to be aware of. However saying that most of the ones I have found have not been to hard to grind down. I hear a noise and they are dust (so to speak). If you roast your own when you cool the beans most rocks drop to the bottom of the cooler (if it is agitated). It is simple then to find them as you are repacking the beans. But there are are Photos/plans on the site for home destoners using a bucket and a variable speed vacum cleaner. I am going to have a go at making one in the near future.

Unfortunately my Smart Grinder choked on a rock recently too. The grinder's motor now makes a different noise when grinding on the 3 finest settings, but otherwise it seems to be grinding ok. Disappointing though given the machine is less than 12 months old. Breville has given me a list of local service centres, though I've been putting it off as I hate being without it! I contacted the roaster, who apologised, but basically said these things happen. He said he'd sort it out with me in a few weeks after returning from a trip. Nothing heard since.

In the last two years that I have been buying green beans from Andy, I have had two small stones with them that I found while cooling the roast on a baking tray, before they reached my grinder.

I can't recall the origins. One rock was the size of a coffee bean and the other about the size of a Jaffa. They were not clods of dirt, they were as hard as granite.

I have had no stones in my Smart Grinder, but once had one in an older grinder that activated the safety clutch.

As I don't have room in my unit for one of Andy's giant destoner machines, I will continue to look for foreign bodies on the tray while the beans cool.

    Barry.

You may find that the rock could be just dirt which after roasting becomes even more hard. It appears to look and feel like a rock. I have had a similar thing happen a few times. both times it has made a noise, but both times it has not caused any damage.

Rocks and other such stuff are very common in the raw material. Most commercial roasters have de-stoners to assist with the removal of nasties.
I would certainly contact the roaster and have a discussion with them. See if they operate a de-stoner and hopefully figure out what went wrong if they do.
Did you keep the pieces of rock? They might even like to see it.

no, the ratchet clutch worked, it just made a lot of noise, I had to remove the bottom burr to get both burrs out as one unit as the top burr was jammed,
then when I got them apart the rock was in three pieces, not sure if I want to put any more of those beans into the hopper
    hopefully no damage done.

I just had a rock the size of a pea caught in my Smart Grinder, gave me a start at first, beans are from a well known roaster and I was wondering how common it is,
dosn't seem to have done any damage that I can see.
Working...
