I had a look at the Smart Grinder in the shops today. Didn't really inspire me. From reading the whole thread about it I'm sure it's quite a capable grinder. But what with all it's shimming randomness etc it sounds like too much trouble for me. The silliness of that statement isn't lost on me.

I've not bought anything yet. I'm trying to keep an open mind, but a Sunbeam!?

Edit: Reading the Pullman review comparing the two at the moment.

After reading that and my own goals I still think the Silvia is for me. Still considering grinder :/

I understand you doubts about the sunbeam... But you'll find a lot of people PID the Silvia because of the issues with temp, and the surfing you need to do to get a decent coffee..and aslong as your not making multiple coffee's.. I'll also think the cons on that old review are enough, actually where enough for me to buy a sunbeam. Which I did after reading that exact review

      Enjoy your Silvia

Maybe I'm odd but the idea of gradually modifying the thing sounds fun. I don't mind surfing the temp on it either. I'm only ever going to be making a single coffee at a time so as long as I catch the first wave I'll be right (hahaha, we'll see).

I'm happy to admit that on paper and that review the Sunbeam sounds technically superior in its design but I don't mind a bit of fiddling to unshackle myself from the computer.

Thank you for the suggestion though, I like out of left field ideas

          Hi Duane,

I'll admit to preferring doser grinders. But I think it's a question of what works best with your technique/workflow.

While it's possible to do a lot of fact finding on the web, if you contact us directly we can usually get to a short list of grinders that suit you pretty quickly.

Thanks Charlie, I'll probably do that at some point shortly

I ended up ordering the Silvia from coffee-a-roma (ran out of my self imposed research time and just went with the cheapest price advertised) and have been making pretty ordinary coffee for a few days with my Hario hand mill. (My fault - not the equipment lol). There's also quite a lot of movement possible in the adjuster between the detents and I'm noticing the burrs on the hand mill are able to slap about a bit which annoys me from an engineering stand point so I'm back investigating electric/insane hand grinders.

I nearly bought a Breville Smart Grinder on Thursday but decided for not a huge amount more I can get something (probably better).

              Duanne,

I know it may be out of your price range, but when it comes to a good investment for not too much outlay, the Compak K3 is recommended.

The build and quality of the grind is similar to the Mazzer Mini, and pride of ownership is there.

I would suggest do a bit of shopping in the sponsor's area, you might be surprise yourself if you make a few phone calls, you may get a good price.

Also, look at the way the Mr. Compak sits with the Miss Silvia. They're made for each other.

This good looking pair's happy together in my house.

Looks the goods! I think I like the Compak now. From the pic it looks like yours is the polished version and not the 'platinum' one?

Chris from Talkcoffee recommended and sold me a Mazzer Super Jolly some years ago - best thing I ever did for coffee making. Now whilst this is the best thing I reckon to pair up to my commercial Faema, it would very much suit any genuine espresso machine. The other choice is a Rocky and mod it (very simply) using pipe and making it a step less adjustable. I have a doserless Rocky that is an excellent little grinder - as modded. The SJ is the way to go to cure upgraditis though and I have it in the doser model which I find every easy to use and fantastic for groups of people.

                  Cheers

I too have a rocky ( but w/doser) and upgraded to a mazzer SJ with a doser. The SJ came up at a great price that I couldn't pass it up.

                    I currently have a Silvia V3.

Take the Hario apart as if for a thorough clean. I suspect you will find that you can stop a lot of the burr movement with strategically placed rubber bands (I use the ones from asparagus).

I had a Rocky for a while, and it too benefitted from some easy modifications to tighten everything up. These days I'm hearing that it is just a bit expensive for what it is.

IMO--doser or doserless is really a matter of personal preference. The critical grinding happens before the doser (or not) comes into play.

While the continuous adjustment is great for getting the grind exact, they are much more work if you are going between espresso and Aeropress--although now that you have a Hario you could have 2 dedicated grinders.

I now have a Macap M4D that is only used for parties. The Pharos is my daily grinder.
