If you do want to go between the numbers - just do a search on here or even just google for "rocky stepless mod".
You'll find a heap of info about a simple addition that makes the Rocky stepless.
It's pretty simple - took me 5 mins to do it once I'd bought the tubing from bunnings / hardware store.

I tend to grind on a 3 or 4 to get the right extraction. Hmm

No it has discreet settings, not continuous ones. 9 or 10 but not 9.5

I'm finding it very accurate but if you mean how fine are the gradations for grinding, how precise can you adjust the grind, then I'm not finding it that different from my Sunbeam cafe series. 8 - dripping fast, but separated. 9 - thin rats tail. 10 - fatter tail, a bit fast.

    My new rocky

I have a rocky with a doser, I weigh the beans and grind. Brush it out clean after each shot. It worked well with Silvia after a few common modifications for me.

I changed to a Mazzer SJ with doser mainly because of a great price. The rocky is my aeropress grinder now or a backup for the SJ if it was ever to break down.

The Rocky side by side with the Maz' SJ has a cheap feel to it but all in all I am happy with it.

Like AtomicGrog above I upgraded from a Rocky DL (which I owned for 6 years) to a Mazzer Mini E. Yes, the Mazzer is better, but it should be for the extra $$. To my mind, the Rocky is woefully underrated these days. It is built like a tank, has an indestructible motor and is an incredible grinder for the price. Plus it is has a great resale value. In all I just don't get why people are so down on the Rocky nowadays. Like the Silvia it has its faults, but it is an indisputable classic.

Hey grimace I'm in the market and are looking at either the Rancilio
Rocky Doserless or Baratza Vario burr grinder. Can the rocky go in between the numbers and how accurate for espresso is it???

The doser means I can grind a larger quantity and it's ready to go straight away - no waiting around for grinding. The doser also gets rid of a lot of the clumps I used to get from my Sunbeam..I need to do a lot less banging the portafilter to get the grounds to collapse now.

The pour is coming out much the same every time, not much variation.

The crema is thicker and darker than before, and the taste is fuller and sweeter.

Best thing I ever did was to ditch my smart grinders and get a real grinder. One happy home barista!
Great little machine Grimac, you won't regret the purchase.

Still not convinced I did the right thing moving from my Rocky to my Mini-e, I think the Rocky is way undervalued and much closer to the semi pro machines.

I'm not a doser fan though, in my mind you either prime with a fixed amount and collect it in the doser or have excess bean usage, dont like either scenario.
