    Hi All

    I got a Mazzer mini 2 months back. So decided to use at work and replace the Compak K3 touch. The problem is the coffee tastes like sh--. It runs fast, blonde and is awful.
    Heres what I've tried.

    i have tried weighing and timing using a training tamper (to take the human variables out) 18 then 20gms and timing say over 25 seconds. I cannot seem to get a sweet spot. I then use the same beans on the compak and its pretty good at 18 grams. I have moved the mazzer up to the choke point and backed it off a notch at a time but still nothing. I have about 4 years of coffee experience. i have a La Scala Butterfly at home and a Isomeac Tea II at work where I have the problem.
    I have used fresh beans from Merlo and Di Bella here in Brisbane. Please any help as I'm a frustrated coffee man

    Is the mazzer a doser or E ?
    If its a doser are you sweeping out any stale grinds before you dose
    I have owned both the mini doser and K3 touch and they both gave the same results for me, its just with the doser if your only making one or two coffees you need to keep the lid off and sweep it clean between shots to clear any stale grinds

    Runs fast,blonde and awful sounds like stale grinds to me.

      Was the Mazzer new or second hand?

        The mazzer fine/corse adjustment ring is very sensitive.
        Moving it a notch at a time makes a huge difference to the grind granularity which is ok to find the ballpark, then use tiny small 1mm adjustments to fine tune.

            I'll second that as well,

            The K3 adjustment collar is just as sensitive as the mini and the OP had no problems with adjustment on his K3,maybe it needs disasembling and a good clean out around the burrs if it was second hand when he bought it.

              Hi its a Mazzer Mini and brand new from one of the coffee snobs suppliers.
              Yes i sweep and grind and sweep before the new shots
              Shouldn't be the beans both from very good roasters Merlo and Di Bella and the same beans go great via the K3

                Oh bugger didn't think of that how does one make such small adjustments as its not marked with numbers or by CLICKS only lines and indents?

                    Hi Noel,

                    You might find that you get more helpful responses if your own replies include a quote from the post to which you are replying. I really can't work out whether you are saying this machine is brand new or not. Post 7 says it is brand new, Post 9 says it's not brand new. Not being picky...just trying to help.

                      My mazzer mini (2 weeks old) has numbers on the top chrome ring, would guess about ten indents between numbers. Used some decaf for affagatto s last night, took five shots to get it right this morning. The ring is pretty stiff and the smallest change affects the pour. The instructions said iirc that a change from one number to another changes the pour by ten seconds, ive found 2 mm change will do it. Maybe it takes a bit of use to settle in?

                        You might be doing it already but, make sure you purge/waste coffee between making adjustments to make sure you are only getting coffee that is affected by your adjustments. 10-15gm on a mini from my experience.

                        Also Im not sure what exactly the problem is. Are you having trouble dialling it in? or is the issue that even when adjusted to espresso parameters the coffee tastes bad?
