I have taken my Porlex and AP as carry on many times and no issues. The first time, I took my 10mm ring spanner with it, i use a nut on the end to secure the grinder adjustment, that was confiscated as a dangerous item... yeah i might take a apart the plane with a 10mm on a 1hr flight....

When i had Sunbeam EM2300 i took that as carry on as well, no issues.

Also want to take my porlex and aeropress on a plane. To Bali then Melb.. Sadly on X-ray I have no doubt that a porlex inside an aeropress looks very much like a bomb! Heh

Haven't had an issue with a hario slim hand grinder and aeropress myself. Also took on as carry on a pizza maker, no issues with that either.

    Cheers

On a slightly related note, has anyone had a problem with taking a hand grinder (mine's a Porlex Mini) in carry-on luggage on a domestic flight? I'm usually close to decent coffee, so don't usually bother with taking it....but am travelling to Perth in a few months and will be staying at the casino (out of walking distance to the CBD cafes that I quite like).

I have only come across the enforcement of a limit the one time I flew with Jetstar, never with Virgin.
'anything you should watch out for?'........... over zealous/bored security officials.

I was bailed up in Sydney (flying to Melbourne) once, after I had been given a flat copper citrus zest grater
by someone who flew it in their hand luggage all the way from Tokyo. Caused a near riot! I had to check it in.
The Virgin staff were non-plussed...............(& only charged me $10 instead of $50).
Nearly missed the last flight out of Sydney that night after a delayed regional connection.
I'm with Chris, check it in.

You would be more likely to make a cutting device out of your sunglasses then a set of mini burrs.

It's literally carry what you can physically carry, no questions asked.
Then it sounds like you have answered your own question. A boxed Mini should be small enough to fit in an overhead locker but be prepared for the possibility that they might ask you to check it in and stick a label on it, at least.

I wonder if you will run into problems with the security check. If security don't allow nail clippers, will they allow burrs that can be removed from the grinder?
That shouldn't be a problem. They will more likely confiscate the screwdriver required to remove the grinder collar to access the burr carrier. Even if it was possible to do this without a screw driver, there would be enough alert/alarmed passengers or attendants to put a stop to any attempt to disassemble the grinder inflight.

Yep I think an over officious security guy is the most likely issue. Mind you, on domestic flights they're very relaxed and it's not like a burr is more dangerous than the blades in a razor, but you never know.

I'm expecting some kind of WTF is that response from them, but I guess they see all sorts of things put through.

Thanks for the advice, but I guess you guys don't to the Syd-Mel 6pm flights that much? It's literally carry what you can physically carry, no questions asked.

I'm not exaggerating, I do the flight weekly and I've never seen them weigh carry on. Perhaps Tiger might be different, but Virgin and Qantas are very lenient.

Hence I'm not concerned about the weight, and having just seen a mini mazzer in a cafe here, I've realised it's smaller than I thought, so I'll give it a fo.

    Thanks again.

*If* they look at it and choose to weigh it, you will get pinged and it will need to go in the hold as it's over 7kg. If it's in the box, probably too big as well.

Agreed with Flynn- check it in....

    Good luck....

Check with the airline first but given the weight (~10kg) I doubt they will let you take it on as hand luggage. I think there is a 5kg limit.
I think you are better off checking it in.

If you're taking it in a box don't seal the box until you get through security, they'll probably want to see what's inside.

I'm potentially picking up a mini mazzer this week and taking it home on a virgin flight. Anything I should watch out for?
Working...
