So I am looking to upgrade from my current Sunbeam Em0480 grinder, which is two years old now and starting to under-perform. My budget is around $320, and it seems that the only two grinders in the range between the Sunbeam ($199) and a Rocky (round $450) are the Breville Smart grinder and Iberital Challenge. I know the general advice is to stretch the grinder budget as far as possible, but given my financial constraints, do you guys have any opinions/experience with either two? I do like the sound of a stepless grinder, which the Iberital brings to the table.

CosmoreX and Talk Coffee have a joint import of a doserless grinder which we know is better finished, well within budget and will outperform both of these on grind quality. See teaser thread. We're probably 5-7 weeks from launch though.
I've been playing with the evaluation model for a few days now and it's doing the job very well.

That sounds really good, and I'd definitely be interested. You'll be looking at a new grinder again in a couple of years if you get either of these two. Both have plastic burr carriers, and rather large manufacturing tolerances. I've had a challenge for a number of years and while it produced good grinds when it was new there is now a fair bit of slack in bottom burr. Stepless adjustment is not always what it's cracked up to be. In the case of Iberital challenge it is a pain in the butt.

Thanks for that. That does sound like a problem-the big issue with the sunbeam grinder is the fact that there is a lot of plastic in the burr carrier-I added shims, but it appears to have taken a lot of tolerance out of the grind i.e. one grind is too fine, whilst one just above it is too coarse. Does the Baratza have a lot of plastic?Originally posted by muppet_man67 View PostYou'll be looking at a new grinder again in a couple of years if you get either of these two.
