    I haven't been 100% happy with my shots lately so in a process of eliminating each possible reason, last night I cleaned my Rocky.

    When I clean it I take out the bottom burr holder, unscrew both burrs, etc so I get every possible bit of gunk out.

    Then I thought I'd measure the retention when fully cleaned - for my first shot it held 4.8g, taking 25g of beans to produce 20.2g of grounds. (After a shake to get as much out as possible)

    This seems a little high to me? Has anybody measured the retention in a similar way?

    Jonathon, realistically I think far too much importance is placed on this stuff.

    If the grinds stick in place, and over time and due to their sticky nature, harden and encrust (and we see our fair share of this when servicing grinders of any brand and model), then these old grinds are not being flung out into the group handle to be used for the next coffee. Then they are probably not influencing any wet coffees being made at any particular time.

    Myself and many others who use grinders on a daily basis to make many more coffees professionally than clients make at home, seldom pull the grinding plates to clean and when we do, precious little comes out. We dont leave coffee in our grinders indefinitely (as many cafes do to go oily and pasty), frequently change origins and blends and use a simple paint brush to brush out the inlet of the grinder between origins with a relatively clean/clear flow path.

    Its all in the management technique. If you do pretty much the same, and happened to find encrusted grinds under the bottom plate, does it mean anything?

    Take care not to over analyse and make the act of coffee making too difficult to enjoy !

      Read Jonathon's post a while ago Chris and was in the process of gathering my thoughts before replying, you've said pretty much what I was going to, only a little more succinctly.

        Ok I'll be a little less anal about this in future.

        That's not to say its not enjoyable to clear out crusty old coffee, whether or not it's affecting the flavour. There's something quite satisfying about having a sparklingly clean grinder, at least until I put coffee in it!

          I agree, gave mine a clean only last week, tend to do it every few months, like you I got a few grams of encrusted stuff out.
          Probably psychological but it even seemed to run better after the clean, bit like washing a car.

            I'm feeling a bit embarrassed about my lack of Grinder Hygiene. I have had my Rocky for several years and never pulled it apart and removed the burrs.
            I did remove the hopper and give it all a brush out about 12 months ago. Admittedly it only does 4 coffees a week.
            After use I upend it over the sink and give it a good shake which results in a light shower of bean shell and about a half-teaspoon of grinds. I hope I am not damaging it with this rough treatment.
            What is the 'service recommendation' on these things? I am too far away from a proper service agent so I would have to do anything myself.

              A suitably sized paint brush to brush out after each use and vacuum cleaner top and bottom (inlet and outlet) whenever you think of it.
