For me it was very much a case of upgraditis: I didn't need to replace it, I wanted to replace it. My old grinder is now on the bench in Di Bartoli's workshop as a test machine.

If 10 years is a reasonable lifespan for a grinder, they are great machines in terms of ROI. This is something I constantly have to debate with people who question the cost of having a decent espresso machine and grinder.
10 year life. Maybe commercial applications. My Mazzer SJ is 11 years old but has only chewed and spat out approximately 300-350kgs...just ordered new burrs and not unreasonably expect another 11 years...then new burrs...etc. plan to leave it to one of the kids.

    Cheers

I guess it's strange to be able to say it, when everything else around you seems to fall apart after 2-3 years.

But touch wood, this Grinder is still perfect for my needs and there is absolutely no complaint and no need to upgrade or consider replacing.
Likewise! Reading back over these posts I see that I had expressed a preference for keeping the Mazzer MiniE, but I didn't, I kept the M4D Speed was the deciding factor, plus it just looked nicer. My Macap has been plugging away flawlessly for ten year now and doesn't look like stopping any time soon. .

This is a Mount Rushmore of grinders, but President Fausto Lincoln is notably absent.

The Macap equivalents look good, so does the Fausto. Are they giving me upgraditis? Not in the least. Do I yearn for a faster grind time? Nup.

Yeh, I don't believe that grind time either. Maybe it was the beans, maybe it was something else, but for me it certainly wasn't real world....

When I bought my Mini E 3 years ago the reccomendation from where I bought it with my ECM T was the Vario - so I am very happy I didn't listen. If I was in the market today, I might have ended up with something else - there does seem to be a lot more choice than 3 years ago.

Is it slow? Never noticed. Maybe if I was making multiple coffees where 20 secs on each cup would actually matter, but I'm not. I like the portafilter rest, I have 25secs to get cups ready. It suits my routine. I am never waiting for the grinder.

They add a portafilter rest so that you can go cook your breakfast whist you wait for your coffee to grind...
