but I bought it based on people's feedback on this forum, plus other forums... and I had a better result compare to the stock standard basket I had before which I would say is worth the money I paid (based on my experience anyway
)
plus, its good to support a sponsor anyway

FYI.. there are several Rancilio double baskets, each very different in capacity and the way they work.Originally posted by WIREDUP View Postby the way a racilio Silva double basket, how many gram of coffee is ideal.
Early silvias shipped with a 12 gm basket ( part # 40 100 010) that was not their best effort !
Later Silvia's (post 2010), shipped with part # 40 100 102 is a much better quality 14gm basket that can actually take up to 16-17 gms depending on the bean/grind and group seal in use.
There is also an 18gm nominal Rancilio basket # 40 100 090 that works well in the Silvia for even larger doses..

The ones he sells, I'd wager :POriginally posted by WIREDUP View PostTalk_coffee what basket do you recommend ?
(That said, they are really good; I can get noticeably better results, very consistently, with these as opposed to the stock Gaggia doubles, which are supposed to be ok)

I use a Robur E at work (4 of them
) and the way we set our grind and time is to firstly weigh out (the ground coffee) to manually dose to get the right grind size. Then we get the timing right on the timer. Always only set one at a time because otherwise you're playing with too many variables.

Just a couple of tips,
1. Don't worry too much about the timer until you have honed in on the grind setting.
Each time you change the coarseness the amount of coffee produced by the set time will change.
2. The grind adjustment collar is very sensitive. Each segment marker on the collar is a big change to the coarseness.
When you get close to the ballpark, it only needs to be moved at 1-2 mm increments to fine tune.

lol... 3 quick answers coming in a row
just to confuse the matter even more, bear in mind that having more beans in the hopper can produce a finer grind in the same setting compare to just single dosing it...

HAHA. I started writing my reply and stepped away for a bit before finishing it up...and got beat by these two responses.
I forgot to add that I got the grinder and a new machine at the same time, plugged everything in and let it warm up etc, fresh beans and all that good stuff. First shot, at the setting recommended by Mazzer was actually pretty darn awesome. So for me I have only slightly had to venture outside the range of the area on the collar that is covered by the sticker.

Hi there, I recently upgraded from a Rocky to a Mazzer Mini-e as well, and am loving the difference. The sticker that you mention is not the 'zero' point as it was with the Rocky...it's the setting at which the factory suggest that particular grinder should be set for espresso. Of course they acknowledge that you'll need to make adjustments for different beans and weather etc so you can move the setting to coarser or finer dependent on your needs.
I am using an 18g VST basket and dose 19g into it (verified by micro-scale after dosing). So for the VST I fine that I need the grinder set a few 'notches' finer than the neutral setting on my grinder. To get the grinder to dose roughly 19g I think it's running for ~25sec (can't recall the exact amount).
If you make the grind setting coarser, the same amount of time would dose more coffee as it takes less time to go through the looser burrs. If you tighten the grind up (making it finer) the same given time will produce a smaller dose.
As both coarseness and dose greatly effect the extraction you should figure out what your dose needs to be, keep that consistent by weighing your dosed basket, and just play with your grind setting. Once you have that dialled in then you can set the electronic timer and get in the ball park each time. Of course you can still weigh the dose to ensure that you're close enough for your preferences.
NB: Using this approach I do 'purge' a few seconds of grinds through the grinder manually before running the timed grind each morning or if the grinder has been unused for some time, to ensure that I'm dosing fresh coffee. A bit wasteful, but I prefer this approach to the alternative of only dosing how many beans I need into the hopper and sweeping/blowing/cursing every last grain out of the grinder for each coffee that I make. Horses for courses I guess.
Hope that helps.
