I've just done the burrs in my M4 - also 5 years old. Just found I was hunting more for a good pour and with bigger adjustments required to get there. Got my burr set from Chris @ TalkCoffee. They are different to Mazzer - and were not standard fare on many sites, so Chris ordered them in.
Well worth the effort. Much more consistent ;-)

I doubt they are... however, it sounds like you've found the answer to your problems!

Cheers Dr Dave. Sounds like a new set of burrs is the way to go. Like you I've been using beans from commercial sources (mostly Gridlock for the past couple of years). Of late I've been having trouble getting crema from the lighter roasts and the roaster I spoke to today suggested the burrs would be the culprit.

Thanks also, Kwantfm. I wonder if the Mazza has the same burrs as the Macap?

And Breno, are you stalking me?! ;-)

    Hi,
Mine was bought in 2008 also and has about 25kg/year only. So almost identical to yours
It became very erratic in dosing so I cleaned/moved blades around one hole to no avail. Tried swapping top <-->bottom, to no avail
Finally I bought new blades and it has been perfect ever since
I buy beans from a commercial source and have never seen a stone or imperfection to damage the blades, but it fixed the problem
    Cheers
    Dr Dave

Just found a reference to expected wear for Mazzer Mini burrs (58 mm) and they are claimed to last for about 300 kg.

Macap M4 - how often to replace burrs?

I have a Macap M4 which I bought new in 2008. As best I can estimate, it's had approximately 130-150kgs of beans put through it in those 5 years (ie. approx. 500g per week).

Speaking to an acquaintance in the trade today (a roaster) he suggested my grinder's burrs would be well over-due for replacement.

Is there a general rule of thumb regarding how often to replace grinder burrs? Or are there hints I can look for in the ground coffee produced?

Any help much would be appreciated.
