The Sunbeam em480 or em500 ( I have both ) have a peculiar way to set the position of the burr. The setting that is obviously required to be right from factory is not, half of the time. I had one of them replaced 3 times for no real reason until I figured out how to adjust it myself. No point attempting to translate the instructions in the user manual written in Chinenglish.
The top burr comes out by turning the main body all the way to the mark that allows the cutter to come out pulling from the wire handle.
Wen you have the burr in your hand you will see the metal cutter is inside a plastic cylinder that has 2 screws in the side. If you take out the screws and reposition the burr inside the plastic sleeve, you allow the adjustment to go further and get finer grind. Trail ad error will give the right position.
Having said all that, my EM0500 has now turned completely inconsistent and the grind changes and it does not respond to small adjustment to the settings. I believe this grinders are not fit for purpose and are a waste of money.

Well I couldn't find any other thread reviewing the EM0500, so I'll post here.
Some kind of nut shell wreaked my last grinder (un-smart Breville) so the coffee shop replaced FOC with a Sunbeam EM0500. I was happy as it appeared a minor upgrade.
First go, and I put the grinder on it's finest setting (40 settings). Wow, talk about coarse! here's a pic of it's finest setting: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...st%20grind.jpg
Sunbeam Espresso machine barely raises any pressure, and stained water the result.
I've call Sunbeam support and they are sending out either "Spacers" or "shims", not that I have any experience in either. Surely this can't be the out-of-the-box best this grinder can do for espresso grind? (Incidentally, the book says use setting 12-15 for espresso machine!)Last edited by salee; 20 November 2014, 03:30 PM.
