  • Mini E(type A) burrs vs Super Jolly burrs

    Hi all,

I've read a few posts suggesting that the SJ burrs are different to the mini E. What I can't confirm is does this apply to a mini type A purchased in late 2012.

Reason I'm confused is when I look at an online store the replacement burr for both the mini e and super jolly has the exact same part number.

Is this true? Has anyone upgraded their mini e type a to SJ burrs abc us there a noticeable improvement in the cup?

    Thanks

    Ogi

    Hi,

I bought my Mini A in April 2013. I changed to SJ burrs subsequently. I don't think there has been a huge change in quality in the cup (I, for one, am a huge fan of the quality of the Mini E as an espresso grinder). The big difference is that it took 40% off grind time.

      Hi Ogi.

Part # from the Mazzer website.
      • Mini Ø 58 mm ref. 182D
      • Mini-E Ø 64 mm ref. 189D
      • Super Jolly-E and Super Jolly Ø 64 mm ref. 33M

The SJ-E burrs are a more aggressive cut than that of the Mini-E. The SJ-E runs a higher capacity motor as well at 350W v 250W.

I'm sure that Mazzer do not recommend the swap as the Mini-E motor capacity is lower. Whether that's of significance in low volume household applications I don't know. I suppose time will tell as there are some owners, kwantfm included who have taken the risk and made the swap. Of interest is that the Lux (doser) uses the 250W motor and yet runs a 61mm 195D set. I guess that's as far as Mazzer is prepared to push it in a doser which is designed to run longer duty cycles.

All are planar grinders, so I'd doubt you'd see any change whatsoever in the cup.

There is curiosity value there for me as Macap just run a more aggressive cut 58mm set in the M4D which is still quicker than all the Mazzers- SJ-E included. It makes me wonder why Mazzer has chosen a 64mm set for the mini-E when they run 58mm burrs in the mini.

      Cheers

      Chris

Thanks gents. I guess based on little to no in cup improvements this is something I can consider when the current burrs wear out.

Had a bit of a think last week and whilst I wouldn't be comfortable doing it in a cafe, I think that it's time to resolve this for home users- so we purchased a mini-e and have souped it up.

My intention is to give it a pretty hard time (at home) and see how it goes

So far, so good....It's done its first kilo (inc 2 x 250g runs) and is running fine. All going well, another 2-3kg in the next week.

All of this has been CS 9-10 so it gets through it easily. As for harder stuff- v light roasts, dunno. I guess the worst case scenario would be an overheat (motor has thermal protection) or a stall.

I am well aware that this mod would be considered a warranty breaker so anyone who wants to do it should be mindful of that. The mini-e now grinds at roughly the same speed as the Macap M4D.

Cost associated- about $80 or so for a set of burrs.

Thanks for keeping the post up to date Chris. Will definitely consider this if I resist the urge to upgrade my grinder.

Have you noticed any taste difference?

                  Hi ogi,

Don't think so. Flat burrs is flat burrs

                    Experiment over.

This grinder is not capable of running the SJ burrs without stalling. Whilst this does no damage, it's not desirable.

The Macap M4D is much faster than a modded Mini-E or a standard SJ-E. My belief has always been that the M4D is a superior grinder.

Is it contantly stalling now or was it a once off? Were you running a full 250g bag of roasted beans through at a time or single doses? I don't intend to swap my Mini E burr for an SJ but I am curious at what capacity the experiment was conducted.

3 back to back stalls on espresso grind medium/dark- was actually a touch coarser as I was using a triple basket/naked.

Nothing more than using the grinder to make cawfee...

Interesting. I fitted my mini doser with SJ burr carriers and 64mm SJ burrs six months ago and It hasn't stalled on me.
