Hi,
This is my first post, although Ive been lurking for some time now.
I have a Rancilio Silvia and a Rocky grinder and have been pretty happy with the shots I have been producing, until now.
All of my pucks are now wet and I am afraid that I have damaged my grinder. One day, right after adjusting the grinder, I noticed that the shot I was pouring was jet black and coming out really fast (with no crema what so ever). So, I went back to the grinder and tried to grind some more coffee, when suddenly it made a loud, screechy sound. I thought "this doesnt sound good" so I turned it off right away. When I went to go adjust the grind, I noticed that the last time I did the adjustment, the "step" wasnt properly locked into place. I gently wiggled it and it went back into place, no problem. Except, that my puck is now all watery and I never had this problem before. Im wondering if I need to re-set the grinder or something. I use to get beautiful puck with imprints on them from the shower screen and group head - now I just get slosh. The coffee itself is ok, but I think it was better before. The crema seems lighter, not the nice caramel colour I was use to.
Ive also cleaned and reassembled the showerhead recently (now I understand why backflushing is needed - yuck!!), but Im pretty sure Ive put it all back together properly, and I was getting excellent shots after this cleaning (but before I did the funny thing to the grinder). So, I am wondering if the grinder is the problem.
Ive tried:
-adjusting the grind (up and down)
-updosing (but Im not sure how much coffee I should be putting in - I may still be underdosing - does anyone have a picture?)
- tamping hard
None of this seems to be working. I miss my hard pucks!! Please can anyone help me?
Thanks, Mary
