  • upgrading from Breville smart grinder, K3 or Mazzer mini? or?

I've been using a Breville smart grinder for a bit over a year now, with a Lelit PL60V2. I've decided it's time to upgrade. The main reason for the upgrade for me is lack of stepless grinding. I do like a few things about the Breville, including:

The rest that holds the group handle while you go and do something else
    Compact footprint and low height
    Pop out base for cleaning
    The push to grind setup

I've never used any of the electronic functions which are confusing and odd IMO. The visual display is weird and the grind setting knob moves in too big increments, adn the display doesn't move exactly as the knob moves.

My general process is to put my dose in the hopper and run it through into the portafilter in two goes, to avoid clumping. I neve store beans in the hopper. I only run about two coffees in the mornign and one in the arvo.

I'm not sure if the K3 or Mazzer are better for my needs, or just better overall, I would obviously have to change how I do things with the Mazzer mini manual, given the doser. I had read it was a bit of a pain to get all of the dose to go through without wastage or stale grinds on the next day, but everyone seems to think its a great grinder. The K3 seems good but different process I guess. Much better pricing, seems Mazzer prices have gone up again since I last researched it. I would probably consider alternatives but these two I have come up based on the research I've done.

    appreciate any thoughts. cheers.

Timely question.......... while were all sitting around chewing the fat about the Macap M4D and singing it's praises! ;-)

The M4D is the only grinder I would recommend, if it works with your budget. M4 doser, if a doser is the way you have to go.

Plenty on here about this type of upgrade choice, check this thread, amongst others:

Make sure you compare the latest model of K3P.
it has better burr location, easy timer adjustment and a PF support so you can leave it to do its job.
As with most grinders do this type, if you are just single dosing with beans, you can leave the hopper in the box and dose direct into the burr chamber....well over 20 gms no problem. That makes for a much more compact unit.
      Beware of "budget creep" !

Budget creep!!?? M4D is budget double!! About.

The Mazzer and Macap dosers are similar in price. Electronic or doser, the inner workings, burrs, motor etc and build quality

are the same. Due to the doser there is no clumping, so when considering these two, a pf holder is irrelevant to their use.

        Manual is manual. ;-)

Try and get some eyes and hands on time with all three?? Always the best way to make the final choice.

Yes, "hands on" is the only way to be sure.
i just don't imagine someone accepting a manual doser after using a smart grinder...or any doser less grinder at home.
Also difficult to justify any kind of doser if someone prefers to single dose beans by weight !

thanks for advice so far. and links, I've since looked at a bunch of relevant threads.

i think in re-researching my old research and doing some new research I'm just about certain I don't want a dosered grinder for a range of reasons.

It seems its now more a question of K3 push/touch, Mazzer mini-e or SJ-E, or M4D. SJ-E possibly too big for my current kitchen though.

Guess I will have to try and get hands on, but right now wondering where the benefit is in going from K3 to the others. Am i getting double improvement in grind quality/consistency and subsequent extraction? Double the convenience or cleanliness? 1/2 the grind retention? Something else? (not interested in bling factor, just having it meet my needs)

Is the need for regularly switching two grind sizes (decaf and caf) a factor between these machines?

I've just ordered an HG - One. The major considerations for me were the very low grind retention, the huge Mazzer burrs, and no electronics to break - sounds perfect for domestic use with none of the drawbacks of large commercial grinders. Fingers crossed!

except... OP liked that the SG was small. :P

the other choice is the vario - though im not sure if it's really an upgrade or just a side step into something very similar but more expensive. (many would say otherwise, and it does have finer grind adjustment)
another point is that you'll never get anything with less grind retention than the SG with commercial style grinders unless you go down the HG-one/ versalab path. they all have chutes facing horizontally which are longer than the SG's. (i think)

                hope that helps. =)
