  • Breville Smart grinder - Can I improve on the fine grind

I've just purchased an "Ascaso Uno Pro" [boiler model] and I'm thrilled with it's performance, but the grind from my Smart Grinder at finest adjustment fills half a cup in 20 seconds. [not good]. Normal grind from my nearby coffee shop gives a perfect dose in 30 seconds.
Question - Can an adjustment be made to the smart grinder to increase it's fine grind. Cheers Borris

Did you get the Smart Grinder (BCG800) or Smart Grinder Pro (BCG820)?

If it is the 800, you can send an email to Breville and get them to send you out a free shim kit which increases the fineness (is that a word?) of the grind, essentially sacrificing the course grind for a finer grind.

The 820 I believe has an inbuilt adjustable shim underneath the bean hopper (don't quote me on that I've only got the 800).

    Good luck

Have a look through the 'grinder' threads. You will find all the info you can possibly imagine on how to 'shim' OR 'not to shim' if you have the Pro version.

The finest setting on my BCG800 was originally too coarse for my Silvia - it started out alright but I needed to keep going finer and finer as the grinder wore in, until the finest setting was still too coarse. My experience with the shim kit has been fantastic. Breville sent the kit for free within a week, and the difference with the kit was night and day. They give you a range of different sizes and you need to play with the combinations to find one that suits you. IIRC I used all of the shims except one - I guess that means it was not particularly good out of the factory. Regardless, after installing the shims it's a completely different grinder (in a good way)

Try this link if the one above doesn't work:
              https://www.breville.com.au/the-smar...ertm-3575.html

I've just upgraded from the BCG800 to the new BCG820 - it is much easier to adjust and grinds fine enough to choke my EM7000.

I'd just like to say thank you all for your help and apologise for not answering your notes earlier. I rang Breville here in Wellington NZ and couple of days later the shims arrived. I have put them in [all but one] and the machine is now a different animal. I can easily get a 25 minute pour in fact today I tried a really heavy tamp and just got drips and a 45 minute pour. The coffee was quite sweet. Yesterday received my best compliment to date "just like a coffee shop flat white". This machine may not be the ultimate but for the money it does quite a good job and I shall be happy with it for some time I hope. Thank you all for your advice and interest. Borris

                  Borris,

I expect you mean 25 and 45 seconds not minutes.

                  Welcome to CoffeeSnobs.

                  Keep us posted.

                  Barry.
