  • Breville BarAroma grinder

    Hi

This is my first post - so please forgive me if this topic has already been discussed or mentioned elsewhere.

Im interested if anyone is using the BarAroma with their machines. I have a Caffee Mokambo Magic and Im not sure if Im using the right grind setting on the Breville to get the best out of my coffee.

I actually didnt want said grinder and gave my husband specific instructions as to what type of grinder to buy me for Christmas (I was hoping for a Sunbeam), but got landed with this Breville and had to smile nicely when I opened the gift. Dont get me wrong - I love having a burr grinder, but I find this one has very limited settings, which I suspect is not helping with mycoffee making.

So if any one can help with suggestions - Id appreciate it.

    Thanks

Not sure what grinder this is however I have seen a new breville grinder that is conical burrset however dont be fooled, this is the same burrset as the delonghi KG100 - which isnt all that good a grinder for espresso.

Is this the one you are referring to?

      Re: Breville BarAroma grinder

This is a conical burrset. Its new from Breville - I didnt know it existed until I received it from my husband. My research for a lower end burr grinder at the time (just before Christmas), pointed me in the direction of the Sunbeam models, so it was a complete surprise to find this Breville.

It only has 5 grind settings - with the finest being a Turkish one. However, no matter how hard I tamp (Im using an Xpressivo tamper), the dose is still very wet when I empty the handle.

So if any one has one of these things Im curious as to how theve got on with it. Needless to say Ive been eyeing up a mini Mazzer, but I have to wait till this thing dies - or else my husband will not be impressed

        Leatrix,

Can you take it back and exchange it with the Sunbeam saying it just doesnt do what it is "designed" to do? The grinder in question isnt good enough....

Also, if youre getting wet/\/soggy pucks, this is because you maybe underdosing...

Also, what is this "Caffee Mokambo Magic" machine... never heard of it....

Nah - cant return it. It was a Christmas gift from my husband. He would be mightly offended (he humours my coffee habit!). So have to use it till it dies... One thing it does do well is grind for plunger - but useless for espresso, as Im finding out.

This is the link to the suppliers of my machine: http://www.mokambo.it/home_e.htm We have the Magic model - purchased in NZ from the local Serio coffee dealers while on sale (another purchse by my husband).

for those interested, this is the link to the Breville site with regards to the grinder... http://www.breville.com.au/products_detail.asp?prod=370

As for the puck - well, tried using less coffee in the handle, tried the espresso grind option on the grinder, tried using more coffee in the handle... So stuck for ideas now.

            Hi Leatrix....

Easily fixed...try grinding some nuts and bolts  [smiley=evil.gif]....

I have not seen or used your espresso machine, but I suspect that you may have a pressurised portafilter. Have a look underneath the filter basket, and if the espresso is forced through one hole, there lies your problem. If this is the case, you will always get sloppy pucks because this p/f style is designed to create simulated crema (even from tan-bark grind and most likely stale supermarket coffee). In addition, you will struggle to get a good result...

If the p/f is not pressurised, then the problem is dose. Get more coffee into the pf until you get a dry puck and adjust the grind to allow for your dose. Be consistent!

Nevertheless, within reason, the more coffee in the p/f the better....

Now grinding nuts and bolts... oooh may have somthing there!

As for the espresso machine - no pretty sure its not a pressurised portafilter, although it does have a single hole. Will have to explore that one more though to confirm. As you can see from the website, theres not a lot of information available in English.

Will try the "more coffee" into the portafilter tonight.

Leatrix- I know that the portafilter has a single spout- have a look underneath the basket- are there lots of holes? Pressurised p/f have a single tiny pinhole somewhere between coffee and pour to restrict the flow of coffee. This causes the pressure and makes pseudo crema...nothing to do with good coffee....

                  Re: Breville BarAroma grinder

No - definitely no pin holes or the like. Its just the basket then the handle.

buy the looks of it, the PF looks like a commercial type... but the picture isnt all that "clear" in this regard....

2mcm is right, if you have a pressurised basket, then this is why you are getting soggy pucks...

dose up and if that doesnt fix your problem...."fix" the grinder, then get yourself a new one as to not offend your husband

Oh and next time do as I do - just get him to give you the mney to buy the present yourself. If he is anything like OG (also a kiwi), he will be glad to hand the terrible job of xmas shopping over to you ;D Failing that you could always fix hubby

What part of NZ do you live in? I know of a few very good places on the mainland that if you go and have a chat with them they may be able to help you out.

                            Welcome to Coffee Snobs Leatrix.

In reading this thread Im not sure you understood what was meant by the pinhole.

You need to look at the bottom of the outside of the basket.
If its pressurised it will have a single pinhole instead of multiple holes as there are on the inside of the basket.

Hi Thundergod - nope there are no single pinholes on the outiside of the basket as you describe. Its only the basket (with its lots holes) and then the handle. But then I again I could be blind... and missing something? Ill have a much closer look when I get home.

Lucinda - were in Wellington, so over the water from the Mainland. I did actually give my husband an approved list of gifts and even specified the Sunbeam with the costs listed and where to buy it. However he got hijacked by the salesperson and bought me the Breville. He usually does what I ask - just this time he didnt listen. Then again he didnt really listen when we bought the coffee machine...
