Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
Ahhh, Wellington
Pomeroys in Nelson is very good if you give them a call (or even visit). Blenheim has CPR which is where my family gets their supplies as they all live in Blenheim and Kaikoura. Oh and Picton has the best fush and chups I have ever tasted. [smiley=cool.gif]
As for hubby - :
mmm what can I say. :-X

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
Hey reubster,
Love the test.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
You forgot "the press brew switch and run :
" instruction in step 2.
The machine must have been poor quality - it should be able to withstand a choked PF without catastrophic failure.... (AKA backflushing)
All I can say is youre better off without it..... and your coffee will be so much better with Miss Silvia

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
Here is a two step surefire way to determine if you have pressurised baskets. If you pass step 1. move onto step 2.
This worked a treat on on my previous entry level "wellseek" machine, and I got to buy a Silvia...........whoo hoo.
NOTE: Apply your preferred disclamier to step 2.
1. Half fill basket with stale coffee and do not tamp or level.
Pull shot.
If the pull seems to produce a foam like creama, you are most
likely pressurised.
2. Set you grinder 1 or 2 settings finer than you otherwise would for
espresso, updose as much as physically possible.
Perform a 40kg tamp.
Pull shot
If your portafilter violently explodes spraying hot coffee and diecast metal all over the kitchen, you can be fairly sure it was a pressurised one...........

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
Yes - my husband can be easily swayed with a good sales pitch and "good" price. :
Ok - checked both baskets (1 small and 1 large) and definitely not pressurised.
So its looking like user error... will try the more coffee approach in the morning.

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
Im detecting pattern here with hubby.
Back OT - then what you described are NOT pressurised baskets.
A good start.

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
Hi Thundergod - nope there are no single pinholes on the outiside of the basket as you describe. Its only the basket (with its lots holes) and then the handle. But then I again I could be blind... and missing something? Ill have a much closer look when I get home.
Lucinda - were in Wellington, so over the water from the Mainland. I did actually give my husband an approved list of gifts and even specified the Sunbeam with the costs listed and where to buy it. However he got hijacked by the salesperson and bought me the Breville. He usually does what I ask - just this time he didnt listen. Then again he didnt really listen when we bought the coffee machine...

Welcome to Coffee Snobs Leatrix.Originally posted by Leatrix link=1175571785/0#8 date=1175644000No - definitely no pin holes or the like. Its just the basket then the handle.
In reading this thread Im not sure you understood what was meant by the pinhole.
You need to look at the bottom of the outside of the basket.
If its pressurised it will have a single pinhole instead of multiple holes as there are on the inside of the basket.

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
Oh and next time do as I do - just get him to give you the mney to buy the present yourself. If he is anything like OG (also a kiwi), he will be glad to hand the terrible job of xmas shopping over to you ;D Failing that you could always fix hubby
What part of NZ do you live in? I know of a few very good places on the mainland that if you go and have a chat with them they may be able to help you out.

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
dose up and if that doesnt fix your problem...."fix" the grinder, then get yourself a new one as to not offend your husband

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
buy the looks of it, the PF looks like a commercial type... but the picture isnt all that "clear" in this regard....
2mcm is right, if you have a pressurised basket, then this is why you are getting soggy pucks...

Re: Breville BarAroma grinder
Leatrix- I know that the portafilter has a single spout- have a look underneath the basket- are there lots of holes? Pressurised p/f have a single tiny pinhole somewhere between coffee and pour to restrict the flow of coffee. This causes the pressure and makes pseudo crema...nothing to do with good coffee....Originally posted by Leatrix link=1175571785/0#6 date=1175641062Now grinding nuts and bolts... oooh may have somthing there!
As for the espresso machine - no pretty sure its not a pressurised portafilter, although it does have a single hole. Will have to explore that one more though to confirm. As you can see from the website, theres not a lot of information available in English.
Will try the "more coffee" into the portafilter tonight.
