    +1

I know you don't want to hear this but I think you may have to spend money to solve your problem, which doesn't seem fair when you have a great but expensive grinder. You may need to buy another group handle, preferably the naked type, or some sort of funnel or some sort of modification to your handle.

I have noticed dramatic differences depending on the beans/roast.
some just seem to geneate their own static and "float" every where, whilst a different roast will cleanly fall into the basket.
there is a known technique ( WDT ?) for spraying a few droplets of water onto the beans in the hopper to prevent static.

I also tried to tap on the side of the portafilter but I couldn't get it to work...
?? cannot imagine why not ?
have you tried simple quick "jiggling" of the PF as it fills

PS do any grinders fit vibrating PF holders ?? ... Seems it might a useful feature .

I tried to put it under the bars but as the portafilter filled the grinds from the grinder's spout started to squirt everywhere.

That's a pretty long bow you've got there gunda, saying one has no need of tools is different from saying tools suck and

    are useless. ;-)

Selling tools to people who want them is just good business?

I'm a sucker for anything that makes the process easier (for me) and less messy. Ground coffee seems to have a wander-lust, but I agree that it's less of an issue with the M4D.

My only problem happens when I take the handle out from under the spout. If I'm not concentrating then sometimes the spout removes removes a bit of coffee onto the bench. I'm an absolute sucker for a gadget and I ended buying a "coffee catcha", yes I know Chris - a not needed garden implement, as you said, but I really like it and it has neatened up my dosing. I still tap and jiggle the handle while its dosing and hopefully stafe that will fix your problem.

My little converted plastic funnel is cheaper, but not as coffee-hipster-nerdy.

You know what? Not one I'd see a need for with an M4D user.

There are however some grinders which are messier and for which a funnel can assist some users. Other like to have gizmos. Some choose to make their own.

I didn't spot that tamping shelf in the picture. For reference, the portafilter that I have a ~1.5cm clearance for as is the standard Domobar Junior pf; even more clearance (~2cm) with a generic E61 naked pf. With those I wouldn't want any more clearance - would be more likely to spill then. As it is the grinder is remarkably un-messy to operate!

Hopefully tapping etc does the trick.

Tap the side of the portafilter gently as the grinder is dosing and if you drop anything, you weren't trying. I can comfortably grind 10.5 sec without waste- no need for funnels, racks or any garden implements.
Tapping the side during dosing works for me too … keeps the 'leaning tower of coffee' well under control - and pretty clean overall

Also notice that the LM stainless handle has a tamping shelf on the base which adds at least 5mm, that is not helping the issue for you. A different handle would not have this problem, or you could have it ground off and repolished if you don't use it.

Another recent purchaser of the M4D. I haven't had this problem because I took a small plastic container and cut the base off and use it as a short funnel. This prevents spillage during grinding and enables you to use the WDT, if that's your thing. But I wouldn't have thought that the M4D would give you too many spillage problems without such a funnel, unless you're grinding a very large mound.
