Even the Roburs at work go quite hot!!! I might start the shift with the collar adjusted at say 200 deg position...and by the end Id be quite close to the "Zero" point on the grinder (270 deg).

    Lawrence,

If you analyse what makes a high quality grinder you can see why it is big.....

It must use large burrs (less heating of the beans and better dissipation of the heat produced....)
The best use conical burrs... several times the price of flat burrs....
They must be held very accurately with respect to each other.... so they are mounted in large, heavy brass carriers (also helps to dissipate any heat)
They need to turn slowly - again to reduce heat produced - and this requires a substantial sized gearbox to reduce the motor speed (1500 RPM) to the preferred range (300-400 RPM).
Because this technology is expensive they use a large, quality, heavy duty motor with quality bearings - for long life and reliability....

So the part below the hopper is big. Now the hopper size could be reduced - but who will buy most of these quality grinders? Coffee Shops and the like (most home consumers worry about spending $700- let alone well over $1000 ++) and coffee shops want big hoppers etc....

So whilst it might be possible to make quality grinders a bit smaller.. (not much!!!) probably 99% of their market want big grinders, high volume and large hoppers etc... so there is little likelihood of a domestic size one...

    Beanjuice,

I fully understand your frustration. I want a top shelf grinder, and am willing to shell out decent money to get a top shelf grinder, with stepless adjustment, yada yada.

But these commercial grinders are laughably too big and would tower over everything in my newly remodelled kitchen. Asthetics play an important role for me, so sadly, the Mini is anything but small.

In the end I am now looking out for a Rocky simply because its smaller. I know that ECM make good looking grinders that are physically smaller than Mazzer/Macap but I think way over priced for what they are.

Very true Viviane.... and it does happen

And what would worry me is I cant find any replacement burrs for the Kony listed even in the US.... but ones for other similar conical grinders are almost US$300 a set (and no after market cheapies either)

I think Ill stick with my La Cimbali.... only costs A$45 if I hit a stone

JavaB I know what you mean about the Kony being low on the radar. Coffeeparts have prices on burrs for the Mini, Jolly, Major, and Robur but no Kony! Not that I imagine ever having to replace burrs on a conical grinder used at home...

Hey thanks for the feedback guys,

Chris, can you elaborate on "the K10 is a better grinder than the Kony". Is it just the throughput or are there other factors that bring you to that conclusion. I am willing to be persuaded.

Shame about the attitude from Mazzer. Pride comes before a fall?

    Hi Beanjuice,

We have two konys in First Pour and I think that we would be happy to sell at least one of them. Neither has had much use - Ill get some prices and get back to you.

I sort of fail to understand what the problem with the kony is. We have a few in cafes and even sold one to someone to use as a domestic grinder in Singapore. That was fun! It is the same excellent build quality as the Robur et al. It is true that it grinds fairly slowly; somewhere between a mini and a super jolly. This means that the Compak is probably a better choice for cafes with decent volume. The nice thing about the kony is that it seems to dose the best out of the mazzers and the dosing chamber is at the same height as the robur.

    Hope that helps,

    Luca

PS. Chris, please remind me about the mazzer thing if I havent gotten back to you this weekend.

The Compak WBC is sold and stocked by Chris (and others who you wouldnt buy from) and I think you will find it is more common as it is one of the WBC recommended grinders i.e. better supported....

If you search on Kony you will find very little info in Australia - and several US sites say "discontinued" .... which is surely a worry.

And they are big because they have gearboxes and are made with quality components to grind large volumes quickly... all of which adds to size, weight and cost....

And I wouldnt be waiting for a small grinder of the same quality at a more reasonable price.... unlike the quality large commercials there wouldnt be the demand - and it couldnt be much smaller in any case.
I spoke with Saeco today to get an update on Mazzer....No eta on anything in the Mazzer range. If nothing is on the water, we are at least 2 months away from anything...So think perhaps for the new financial year....

Mazzer are busy supplying USA and are to put it bluntly, waaaaay arrogant. They will not respond to emails begging that we be allowed to spend $20k with them....Im over them and will look for alternatives...

Saeco has some stock of Mazzer Super Jolly- which we will do at cost with any major purchase.

JavaB, what do you mean the Compak is "better supported"

The other plan would be to get a Mini now and wait for a reasonably sized/reasonably priced conical to come on the market.

Well given that throughput isnt on the top of my feature list... I am used to the MDF remember, as long as the Kony is as fast as say a Mini, I should be happy.

I have read that the K10 is a bit louder than the Kony, leaves more grinds in the chute, and that some parts are fragile and easily break. If all that is true then I see no reason to esteem it above the Kony based soley on throughput. I am not running a cafe here

The Kony does come into Australia in limited numbers.

As stated by others, Id be looking seriously at the K10 WBC which is only a tad more expensive and is a better grinder than the Kony....

    beanjuice....

Seeing you are talking "Serious Grinders"....

Have you thought about the Compak K10 WBC...

Better throughput than the Kony and is better supported (send a PM to Chris if interested).

The Kony looks pretty and the other one seems to be clever but I think parts may be an issue if anything went wrong.

Where to buy Mazzer Kony in Sydney

I need a new grinder since I am giving the MDF away to my brother. I am seriously considering the Kony but they seem hard to find. Anyone know who imports or stocks them?

Yes I know you all think its overkill but go ahead and say so anyway

I would like to see a Casadio Istantaneo in action but I doubt they have a distributor in Oz.
Working...
