Re: ROCKY NEEDS TO GO FINER - but stuck against po
thanks Lawrance - that is great. I have taken out the screw and my shots have improved even more with the slightly finer grind!!! The Indian Peaberry really needed that bit more!!

Re: ROCKY NEEDS TO GO FINER - but stuck against po
I managed to find a picture that shows you what I mean by the "flat edges" of the burrs.
Hope this helps allay any fears of damaging your grinder.
See how the ends of the burrs are machined flat?

Re: ROCKY NEEDS TO GO FINER - but stuck against po
Gday Oz,
I think the first thing I did with my Rocky after unpacking was to remove this screw and put it in a safe place.... in a drawer somewhere :-?
As T8 mentioned, you cant come to any real harm especially if youre the only user. If there are other users though, maybe it would be a good idea to relocate the screw such that the real zero and indicated zero are only a couple of notches apart. At least this will prevent any mishaps from a potential ham-fisted user
... you know the type, always trying to screw the volume control on your $20,000 Sound System to position 12 when it only goes as high as 10 >
.
Mal.

....arrhh thanks mate.... I didnt look at them to see. Thats a great help, because I can remove the pin and feel good about it....I love modifications on the run (which is probably why I drive LRs)!

Re: ROCKY NEEDS TO GO FINER - but stuck against po
The circular burrs on the Rocky are smooth at the edges, so even if the two grinding discs are in contact with one another, the actual burs themselves dont gnash against one another.
So the worst youll do is make scraping noises but you wont damage the burrs themselves.
You may already know this, but I thought Id mention it anyways.

Re: ROCKY NEEDS TO GO FINER - but stuck against po
Took it apart, cleaned and zeroed. The problem is that I then have to back off the brass set a quater of a turn to get the hopper to line up with the stopper screw JUST against the stop. At that point its indicating minus 1 at the stop point. I used to be able to just choke my machine for a 45 second or so pour, but I think the key to my problem is in the bean. The Indian Peaberry is a very light bean and when roasted is lighter still of course. I think that perhaps the oils and denseness are just not there - hence the quick pour. I have now poured a 16 second pour and it got magic creama and taste (and colour - brown with hints of red in part), and thats the best that im going to do, unless I take off the stopper screw and get it a bit closer to the real Zero point - hesitent about that because I might forget and set it too low and hit the burrs!
I think I will live with it as it is, but its odd.

Re: ROCKY NEEDS TO GO FINER - but stuck against po
Its not coming out like dust....it does need to go finer. The tamps are gorilla tamps and the dose is so large that the PF is only just about to be put into the group head. The indicated zero on the Rocky is not the real zero. I think I will pull it apart and try to re-zero the plates.

Re: ROCKY NEEDS TO GO FINER - but stuck against po
tamp harder?
edit: sorry i just read you said you are doing hard tamps.. surely at the finest setting the grind is coming out like dust already - i dont think a finer grind is in order.. try a coarser grind perhaps, it may tamp more effectively.

ROCKY NEEDS TO GO FINER - but stuck against post
Hi all. I just roasted Indian Peaberry and its a nice drop. I did a dark roast, and a just into second crack lighter roast with the popper. The trouble is that with both roasts on the finest setting I am getting 12-15 second pours - no nice rat tailing to start off just straigh into it! I am dosing to the absolute maximum and doing gorilla tamps but to no avail. The brew pressure metre tells the same story with the metre being well under were my best extraction is with the 6910.
When I first zerod the Rocky ages ago, I followed the book. My Rocky dial is now at -1 and hard up against the screw stop. I usually run the rocky at an indicated 1-2 so it has always been close to the stop. Before I pull it apart has anyone got any answers to how to set up the Rocky to give me a few more finer grind settings?
Thanks very much .
