Macap M2D

Hi everyone

It's time to move on from the Smart Grinder and I am looking at the Macap M2D or M2M. The D version appeals for the timer facility, however they don't seem as readily available in Australia as the basic M version.

Has anyone had any experience with the D version to comment if it's worth hunting one down? A local retailer who only stocks the M told me that the importer is not bringing many of the M into the country due to concerns about the inaccuracy of the dose timer function.

Being able to set a time for the dose once I've dialled in a coffee is a feature I like of the smart grinder and hence my interest in the M2D. Any advice or experience would be appreciated.

I'm not a fan of analogue timers either. They generally don't work that well.

We can source the grinder if you want one, but I'd save the $$ and get the M2M

So the Compak K3 also uses an analog timer is that right?

Yes it does but I found the timing fairly consistent and that is on the old model with the adjusting knob ridiculously placed underneath the tray. As an experiment I did a timed dose four times in a row and there was no more that about 0.3 gms difference. I started this with the hopper about half full. So don't rule out the K3. Both good grinders. Interestingly I didn't use the timed feature for two years and then one day I decided to give it a go and fell in love with it. I wouldn't buy a grinder without it now.

I'm in the same boat as you, love the timer on the Smart Grinder, it allows me to figure out pretty reliable dosing. Not sure why they put them underneath on the original K3 Touch and the M2D.

Drew, I spoiled myself last year and got the macap m4d. In my opinion the ultimate home grinder and yes it has a digital timer to .05 of a second but twice the price of the k3. However, the difference in the cup is negligible. So you'll be able to make just as good a cup with the k3 or m2m to the m4d with only slightly less accuracy and consistency. Good luck with your choice.

If you are after a digital timer you can get one of these (from auber instruments US ), I use one on my mazzer mini, works well, has 2 set times plus shot counter and easy to adjust. Just plug your grinder into it ( I changed the socket on mine )
