  • The Ultimate Grinder?

I was just reading about grinders and have been thinking of automating as much as possible.
I was thinking it would be a combination portafilter/grinder system where the portafilter would fit into the grinder, the grinder would take a preliminary weighing and then proceed. The top of the portafilter would be cupped in with the grinder outlet.
The grinder can now proceed to grind and produce an extremely accurate mass of coffee grind for consistent espresso. Then a stirring mechanism utilise the Weiss distribution technique to give an even distribution of coffee. Automatic tamping would be introduced here too if we wanted, since the portafilter is custom we could ensure it was sitting nic and flat so that the tamp would be precision measured for pressure and be dead flat.

Other features would include configuration of every parameter, grind speed, grind coarseness, grind dose weight, WDT time and tamp pressure, not to mention stored configurations for all your favourite coffee types. And why we are at it, why not add multiple hoppers for different coffee beans and the system can automatically assign a configuration to each hopper.

    What do you think?

And some more ideas, has RFID baskets which automatically tell the grinder what basket is in use and the machine can look up what settings it has for that specific basket. Could utilise a range of shapes for same volume baskets to get different results perhaps.

Mmmm wasnt talking about the LM Swift but I want one now... although I still think all the computer control stuff would kick ass.

I reckon LM have perfected the time machine, travelled to present day, read these forums then travelled back in time to make that damned grinder. LOL

Great thoughts there; I think that you will be very interested in the new grinders from La Marzocco, Elektra and Mazzer being debuted at the Specialty Coffee Association of America conference at the moment. But I just have a few thoughts to add:

*There is always going to be a difference between the perfect home grinder and the perfect cafe grinder ... and, for that matter, the perfect grinder for high volume and low volume cafes. For example, if you think that you need that belt-driven, motor cooling stuff for three shots a day you have to be dreaming.

*The WDT varies from being quite useful to being a phenomenal waste of time. Its primary purpose is to correct for grinds falling out of grinders in giant clumps. If you dont have that to start off with, theres no need to waste your time with it.

*From the perspective of getting a perfect shot, I dont think that specific diameter baskets are really an issue.

*Lots of people have experimented with various sorts of timers for their grinders, to varying degrees of success. Darkroom timers seem to be the cheapest alternative, but there are a number of other options. The new grinders from casadio, la marzocco, elektra and the existing mahlkoenig grinders all have built-in timers. The mini-e has an analog timer, as opposed to a digital one.

              Cheers,

              Luca

                some further ideas

WDT could be replaced by inserting a sort of automated "flour sifter thingy" between the grinder outlet and the PF, so that the grinds could be declumped and seperated prior to hitting the basket.

Naturally being a silent machine, it could then include sample sounds of all you favorite grinders.

                  Re: The Ultimate Grinder?

Timing for use in dosing? I never thought of timing and I figure it should be quite good. I cant envisage that the variables involved would play too much a part but then again, coffee can behave in strange ways. Coercing beans to certain death isnt easy and they might be reluctant to play lemmings and jump down the chute. HAHAHAHA.

I might buy some of those 0.1g scales from eBay and see if this aids my dosing. As for your comments Luca, regarding the WDT being a waste of time, I can state that my grinder doesnt seem to create a clumpy grind at all; Sunbeam EM0480. Maybe I am unaware of the size of the clumps I am trying to get rid of but I can only try the WDT method and see how it goes. With any luck what you say is true and WDT will be a thing of the past for me.
I should invest in a bottomless PF too to aid in inspection. More toys!

Back to the ultimate grinder, I was thinking about even putting a modification on my Sunbeam as its relatively cheap, with a very sensitive scale system to see if I can get accurate doses automatically.
