I was just reading about grinders and have been thinking of automating as much as possible.
I was thinking it would be a combination portafilter/grinder system where the portafilter would fit into the grinder, the grinder would take a preliminary weighing and then proceed. The top of the portafilter would be cupped in with the grinder outlet.
The grinder can now proceed to grind and produce an extremely accurate mass of coffee grind for consistent espresso. Then a stirring mechanism utilise the Weiss distribution technique to give an even distribution of coffee. Automatic tamping would be introduced here too if we wanted, since the portafilter is custom we could ensure it was sitting nic and flat so that the tamp would be precision measured for pressure and be dead flat.
Other features would include configuration of every parameter, grind speed, grind coarseness, grind dose weight, WDT time and tamp pressure, not to mention stored configurations for all your favourite coffee types. And why we are at it, why not add multiple hoppers for different coffee beans and the system can automatically assign a configuration to each hopper.
