Im assuming "zero" is when you can *just* hear the burrs start to touch - in my case, Id spin the burrs & then move the hopper/adjustment slowly until I could hear a very faint scraping - moving further & the scraping gets louder. So, my "zero" point is around 7, maybe 7.5. Occasionally on 8 I can hear a tiny scrape at the end of grinding.

Anyway, Im getting gushers on 10 & fast (15s) pours on 9. Using 8 seems better, but Im worried about that slight scraping noise - 7 seems bad, as it would have lots of burr scraping.
I thought Rocky had a lot more play available in the espresso-level settings? ie I thought Id be able to really dial it in to a choice of settings, rather than being forced to use only 8/9.
Last time I had my Rocky apart for cleaning, I found true zero was with dial on "0", and I typically grind around +5 to +8.
I find my true zero by turning the burs by hand and slowly adjusting the hopper, (this requires you to leave the finger guard out). When I cant turn burr by hand is how I tell. I never run the motor and listen, even though it says you can in the manual.

I agree with you that there should be more margin between true zero and a suitable espresso grind, something doesnt seem right,....
time to go back and clean again, re-check everything.

    Gday shauno,

Sure does sound a bit strange. Have you tried cleaning the Burr Carrier threads right out with a stiff bristle brush/toothbrush, especially the stationary carrier..... vacuum out any debris and then replace the upper carrier. Screw this right down as far as it will go with the power OFF and see if this is the same Datum point as when you tried zeroing with the grinder running.

If you find that a "static" zero results in the upper carrier seating slightly lower down than the "dynamic" zero, Id be going with the "static" zero and not worry too much about occasional little strange noises as its more likely to be just some minuscule end-play in Rockys motor shaft. See how you go and report back,

    Mal.

    shauno,

Certainly does not sound right to me.
When I had the rocky, my true zero was around -5, and most of the time I was grinding around +3 to +7 (so 8 ABOVE zero).

Are you certain everything is threaded correctly and attached to the hopper as it should be?

Bringing up this old thread due to a similar problem, and its the same Rocky:

I took it apart (hopper/burr carrier, etc) to compare to the MDF - both the burrs & burr carriers are so very similar to the Gaggia MDF, youd think they were copying each other. Put back together, and attempted to find "zero".

Taking note of what JB has already said Sullo, you are definitely in the ballpark anyway so shouldnt have to waste too much more to dial her in,

    Thanks JavaB

thought that mightve been the case but again wanted to remove variables.

    Cheers

    Steve,

No two grinders (of any given brand/model) are alike when it comes to settings.... (even with exactly the same bean, roasted to the same level with the same relative humidity etc... etc....)

A rocky at a given number may choke a Silvia...... a different rocky at the same number could result in a fast pour on the same machine....

You will find the spread which people use too wide to be of any use.... you just have to adjust yours to get the correct extraction rate.... and yep- that will burn some beans.....

    Rocky doserless setting for Silvia

Hopefully Im not asking something that Ive missed in trying to source answer here, so here goes..

What settings do most ppl use on a Rocky Doserless grinder for a Silvia?
currently Im at 8 but thinking might have to go smaller, still sorting out tamping and shots time,. Just trying process of elimination.
Im running out of coffee at a very rapid rate!
I understand that different beans might require slight adjustments so if those owners could pls advise their "general setting" or such that would be very much appreciated.

    TIA
