  • Grinder For Gaggia Classic

    Hi,

I just got my self a new Gaggia Classic today and have been messing around all day trying to pull a drinkable shot.
I use to use my Sunbeam Crema with the Delonghi KG100 and that made nice coffee.

Nice coffee is good but was after great coffee so upgraded.
I am trying to use the Delonghi KG100 with the Gaggia but Ive gone down to the lowest grind and it still comes out too fast flat looking with no crema.

Basically looks like the crap left over in your drip tray.

I have a bad feeling I might have to upgrade that too so does was looking for something that will do the job and under $300 I guess or if anyone has used a Delonghi KG100 with the Gaggia and can give me some pointers that would be great.

    Thanks
    Michael

    Re: Grinder For Gaggia Classic

Gday Michael and welcome to CS.
I dont know how handy you are when it comes to pulling things apart, but if you are, there are some hints on this link as to how to make the grind finer on your grinder (Solis 166/De-Longhi KG 100). Bearing in mind that this mod will no doubt shorten the lifespan on the grinder. If youre not mechanically inclined, you might have to get yourself a better grinder. The De-Longhi/Solis are good for machines with a pressurised portafilter, ie your old machine, but they are not up to the task for machines that dont have these devices, such as the Gaggia.

    Good luck with it.

      mtarros, hi and welcome, "welcome".

One thing that you will learn from any of the threads in CSs is that you should get the best possible grinder that you can. The quality of the grinder is almost more important than the machinery you are using provided that you have fresh beans.

From all accounts the Iberital Challenge has proven to be a good grinder for espresso

Have a look at that and it might give you some ideas.

cool not sure if ill risk doing that mod on the grinder.

Im sure i can get like $70 for it on ebay.

Cool might keep an eye out for a Iberital.

Also when looking around on the net I found Isomac Macinino and also Saeco Burr Grinder.
Will any of them be up for the job needed?

        Thanks for all the help.
I have always read thing from this site and now needed to post and its a great help having this web site.

          Re: Grinder For Gaggia Classic

          mtarros,

          Welcome to CoffeeSnobs..

Having done that mod to the grinder I can tell you that it isnt worth the effort.

Not only is the grind size too large.... but the size of the grinds is inconsistent... and becomes more of an issue when you mod it to grind finer... There is quite a bit of size variation (down to powder)..... and it is almost impossible to get a good pour (with a reasonable espresso machine) as it will go from a gusher to a choked PF with just the smallest adjustment....

Either sell it or keep it or plunger coffee (which it grinds excellently)....

And yep, the Iberital is an ideal grinder for your requirement.... it has very fine adjustment.... but will take forever to go from espresso to plunger..... so if you like the occasional plunger coffee.... keep the KG100 for that (thats what mine is used for now as the La Cimbali Jnr is also an "espresso only" grinder - similar to the Iberital).

And DONT buy anything cheaper than the Iberital (around $300).... the others are a waste of money!

            Two words...Iberital Challenge.
I use it with my Gaggia Coffee Deluxe, which is basically the same as the Classic without the 3 way solenoid valve.
I use to use the Sunbeam EM0480 which is an excellent grinder for the money, but ended up upgrading because I couldnt dial in the perfect grind. No longer an issue.

              Hi Michael.

I had the same setup as you (Gaggia Classic and modified KG100) and Im going to echo the sentiments of previous posters...ditch the KG!! As you have found, its just not up to the task for Espresso, end of story! Its not made for those of us who are, (lets be honest here), anal about good espresso. Plunger coffee though...probably OK.

Some people are really bothered by the advice that says buy an expensive grinder because it will be better (especially when it comes from site sponsors). Inevitably though, it proves to be the case; especially where espresso is concerned.

                Re: Grinder For Gaggia Classic

Well after so many people saying to get the Iberital I have ordered one.
Just have to wait for it to come in now.
The person from also said that grinder is very good for Espresso and will last me for years.

Just something a bit off topic will the grinder do a Turkish style grind.
Have had some fresh beans ground from Merlo for that style and must say you can get a very nice flavor.

                Thanks for all the help.

Hi Michael- I have slightly modified your posting to remove the name of the supplier as the equipment mentioned is available from many of the site sponsors....

We welcome discussions on all equipment- regardless of where its sourced from but we ask that that the site sales and posting rules are kept in mind by all CSers when posting

mtarros, glad to hear that you have ordered a good quality grinder to start having fun with. I am fairly sure that the Iberital would be more than capable of producing a grind for turkish coffee.

                        Re: Grinder For Gaggia Classic

Yes it will do turkish style grind...you will have to do a lot of turning of the grind knob though. I switch between espresso and plunger grinds daily and find I have to turn the grind knob about 20 times. I figure youll have to turn it a lot more to get a turkish grind...

What I have done is created a marker so I know where to switch back too. I straightened a paper clip and blu tacked it on to the grinder so it lines up with the marker tape on the hopper. I then use another small ball of blu tack on the tape marker so I know where the espresso grind is set to.

Yay got my grinder and got a better shot.
It still needs some slight adjustment as it came out a bit fast but next one will be sweet.

lol yea and I think I might try the steam trick too as I ran out of steam and it put water in my milk.
                          Did not taste too nice.

Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction the grinder works very well and they match.

Just got one thing what is the little rubber button on the bottom right for?

All I got with the machine was a sheet of paper with not too much information about it.
