    Re: Grinder For Gaggia Classic

    Stephen,

Suppliers of any quality coffee equipment are few and far between here in Perth....

There are the normal retail outlets..... who wouldnt know a quality grinder, coffee machine or anything else if they fell over it...... and a couple of commercial coffee machine dealers - who sell mainly "top shelf" gear into the trade.....

Ive been able to find nothing in the way of in-between suppliers. I know of two people here who bought Iberitals (one a fellow Snob) and both came from site sponsors over east.

If you can add to the budget, get the Iberital. The steps on the Sunbeam are indeed too large for refined espresso production as JavaB mentions.. I do find it frustrating... however, in the price range, the Sunbeam EM0480 is untouchable for grind quality and it was all I could afford at the time.

My dream is a Compaq K6/\/Mazzer Mini ...  and if you can stretch your budget to these.. NICE!!  :-)
I think I can squeeze in an Iberital but I like to see it first before I commit. The only problem is nobody seems to be able to tell me where in Perth I can go to have a look one!! Surely someone in Perth must sell coffee grinders?

    Stephen,

As far as I am aware the different models are available here.... and whether you choose the doser/doserless etc is a matter of personal preference.

The big difference between the Iberital and the Sunbeam is the adjustment method. The Iberital uses a stepless adjustment for grind size (essential for the production of the best espresso as you need to make small adjustments as the beans age etc. The Sunbeam is stepped... and most users find the steps are too large. I would always recommend use of a stepless grinder or at least one with very, very small steps (Like the Rocky).... with the Sunbeam IMHO the steps are far too large. There are also some reliability issues with the Sunbeam (many requiring warranty replacement).

There are other cosmetic differences... but grind adjustment is the most important.

Country of manufacture - cant help there Im afraid.

Is it okay to link to another website that has two different versions of Iberital Challange? I believe the models are as follows:

    Iberital CA
    Iberital CGA

I believe one says semi-automatic, the other is manual. I take it people buys the semi-automatic nowadays? Then it is just a matter of choosing doser or doserless version?

Another question I want to ask. Since this grinder uses the same conical burrset as the Sunbeam EM0480, what makes this a better grinder than the Sunbeam? I am basically asking for $100 more, what am I paying for? Last but not least, where is this grinder make?

    Thanks again
    Stephen

    Hi,

Well I think the original grinder had blunt burrs as it was a hand me down lol.
The shop that I got my new machine from set up the same grinder and it was poring to slow with the finest grind.

I think the difference between them is the consistency of the grind.
On the original grinder some partials came out like dust then other partials were like sugar.

    Hey mtarros
I am going through the same dilemmas as you.
Did you by any chance work out exactly why the original grinder was not getting you a good brew?
I can understand that a good grinder will be more stable over temp/humidity/whatever. I can also understand that a set of blades will chew up the beans and thus lead to an unstable grind.
But how does the grind vary when using a cheaper set of burrs like in the the Sunbeam, compared with say a flat set like the Rocky?
Can you feel the difference with your fingers?
    Ta

Just got one thing what is the little rubber button on the bottom right for?

All I got with the machine was a sheet of paper with not too much information about it.

Yay got my grinder and got a better shot.
It still needs some slight adjustment as it came out a bit fast but next one will be sweet.

lol yea and I think I might try the steam trick too as I ran out of steam and it put water in my milk.
    Did not taste too nice.

Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction the grinder works very well and they match.

Yes it will do turkish style grind...you will have to do a lot of turning of the grind knob though. I switch between espresso and plunger grinds daily and find I have to turn the grind knob about 20 times. I figure youll have to turn it a lot more to get a turkish grind...

What I have done is created a marker so I know where to switch back too. I straightened a paper clip and blu tacked it on to the grinder so it lines up with the marker tape on the hopper. I then use another small ball of blu tack on the tape marker so I know where the espresso grind is set to.

mtarros, glad to hear that you have ordered a good quality grinder to start having fun with. I am fairly sure that the Iberital would be more than capable of producing a grind for turkish coffee.

Hi Michael- I have slightly modified your posting to remove the name of the supplier as the equipment mentioned is available from many of the site sponsors....

We welcome discussions on all equipment- regardless of where its sourced from but we ask that that the site sales and posting rules are kept in mind by all CSers when posting

Well after so many people saying to get the Iberital I have ordered one.
Just have to wait for it to come in now.
The person from also said that grinder is very good for Espresso and will last me for years.

Just something a bit off topic will the grinder do a Turkish style grind.
Have had some fresh beans ground from Merlo for that style and must say you can get a very nice flavor.

    Thanks for all the help.
