A grinder should require cleaning and in a 1kg/week household may need a burr change after perhaps 4 or so years.
If it retails at near $700 and requires modification or repairs to make it work beyond a year or two, I'm calling that lousy bang for buck and not fit for purpose.
Repair would fall under the provisions of Australian Consumer law.

Thanks for the input Steve. I was previously looking at Vario W as you said, but had not realised it was poorly built - I gather people are seeing breakdowns after a short period of use?
$300 for a hand grinder seems pricey too, but the Lido does seem to be the goods.
My solution seen in that thread seems to have eliminated the problem, along with checking on the grub screw on drive shaft yearly, I have to conclude is going to significantly lengthen the life of my grinder. I have brewed some really amazing cups with it, so I have some love for it.

Vario W with ditting steel burrs does a spectacular filter / pour over grind = clean, sweet highlights acidity. But the grinder is overpriced and poorly built.
The OE Lido 3 swiss conical burrs is not very far behind or better yet its just a slightly more comforting / different flavour profile = better body, excellent value, very well built and will last a lifetime. Very easy to crank at coarse grinds.
