the plunger im planning to use is a cheap one - Bodum plunger  but i welcome recommendations for other brands

    Hi silverpearl.

I suppose if you are only going to use it for plunger grinding, the Breville one would do the job. The RRP is $70.

Another possibilty might be the Sunbeam EM0430 - RRP $80.

I would suggest youll do just as well, if not better, by trying your local appliance retailer and seeing if you can get a better deal in box with warranty (rather than the auction site).

Plus, youll have it right away.

Of course, when upgraditis hits (and funds allow), neither will really cope too well with doing quality espresso grinding.

For the moment though, and for plunger only, I would say either would be a decent unit.

    Brett.

Re: please recommend me a grinder?

Ive not really ever looked at brands that much.
As long as the glass seems sturdy, it should be fine. I would prefer glass over plastic (not even sure if plastic is an option).

I wonder, does it have to conform to an Australian standard? Theres no mark on my single.

I have some bodum plungers. 4, 6 and 8 cup. Never had any issues.

I also have a single cup promotional plunger that came with some pre-ground stuff many years ago. It is still going strong too.

Ive found as long as you dont choke them with too much coffee, Dont force the plunge before it is ready and clean the parts well, they last a long time.

Ive only ever seen one glass break and I think that was due to the operator, not really the product.

Re: please recommend me a grinder?

Actually, the Breville crushes the beans and even for Plunger its useless... IMHO of course....

Youre best bet is the Sunbeam EM0450, although retails for $159, they can be had for $130 ... else, head to that auction place and you get can a Delonghi KG100 - which is ok for plunger grinding

Re: please recommend me a grinder?

Well, the RRP for the delonghi is $169. Too much at that price for what it is.
Its also marketed as a range of other names. The Solis, the *$ barista grinder and others Im sure.

You would be better off with one of the Sunbeams in my opinion.
Put your best haggling face on (Bert - this bloke wont haggle!) and see the best cash deal you can get the EM0480 or  EM0430 for.

As marc said above, if you could get an EM0480 for $130, that would be a pretty good effort with the added bonus that it could also cope with some entry level coffee machines as well.

Edit - sorry, Im getting my Sunbeam model numbers confused.
The ones I can find on the Sunbeam web site:
                EM0450 - RRP $159.00
                http://www.sunbeam.com.au/products/product_details.cfm?rec_id=659&sec_id=33&home_id=2
                EM0480 - RRP $199.00
                http://www.sunbeam.com.au/products/product_details.cfm?rec_id=587&sec_id=33

and haggling somewhere like the good guys with cash should bring the prices down.

I couldnt see any of the Delonghis on there today. Well, there is 1 but it is a lower model.

Someone has a bunch of craptacular plastic machines with a grinder inbuilt. Seems to be a container load of them on there today.

                            Thems the ones.
I can imagine lots of punters shelling out the readies for these thinking they are getting a good machine.

Hopefully there wont be too many disappointed people.

I suppose there will some people wholl be happy with it.

They seem to move an awful lot....

Look I can buy a great espresso machine at a bargain price.... : :

Get it home..... doesnt produce great coffee (must be me ) so to the back of the cupboard it goes..

And another disillusioned potential CoffeeSnob disappears.
