You can try putting earplaugs in his ears.
My kids would (and always have) sleep through a bomb going off.

Its the reduction gearbox that makes most of the noise,Originally posted by tempestv8 link=1180576817/15#19 date=1181187719Something to do with the burr set design, as the conical burrs are noiser than the flat burr sets, apparently.

Re: making Iberital Challenge quieter??
You could sell the Iberital and switch to a Rancilio Rocky.... but you wouldnt be able to eliminate the noise.
The Rancilio motor hums so silently when there are no beans in the hopper that Ive forgotten to turn it off a few times. But if there are beans there, it does make a small racket, although probably not as aural as the Iberital. Something to do with the burr set design, as the conical burrs are noiser than the flat burr sets, apparently.

Re: making Iberital Challenge quieter??
yep - that is exactly the issueOriginally posted by Thundergod link=1180576817/15#17 date=1180703309Maybe the 3 year old wants a coffee.
she comes downstair to the kitchen and ask: "do you make coffee?" while still rubbing her eyes.
Just to set things straight, no one actually complains, just she wakes up earlier than she would if the grinder is not on.
Thanks for all the suggestions including trading in the 3yr old, but thats too extreme

LOL ;DOriginally posted by JavaB link=1180576817/15#15 date=1180680597Mal,
Ive heard of "closet" coffee drinkers....
But you must be the first closet coffee grinder...
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
, dont know about that JB (pretty small closet :P) but desperate situations call for desperate and creative solutions when ones significant other is making threats along the lines of shoving the grinder where the "sun dont shine"
. The box I used was a bit larger than a shoe-box and opened up from the small ends, fitted over the Lux perfectly.

Re: making Iberital Challenge quieter??
When I had a Lux grinder, also a bit noisy... I made a little sound-deadening booth from a suitable size cardboard box that I lined with sound absorbent material.
To use it you make sure the GPO switch is OFF, use a suitable receptacle in position to catch the grinds, add the beans to the hopper, turn the Grinder Switch ON, put the S/P Booth over the grinder and then turn the GPO Switch ON. Worked like a charm with the Lux but am not sure if the Challenge has an ON/OFF toggle switch or a Momentary Action Switch. If its the latter you will have to set something up to hold the switch ON while the S/P Booth is over the grinder.
Thats it
. Once you get used to this routine it only takes seconds longer to use than without the Booth and Baby will remain asleep
.

My wife has told me that shes been out at a cafe and when the barista has knocked out the old puck on a knock tube, the bub has looked around to see where dad is.

Re: making Iberital Challenge quieter??
Na... my 23month old sleeps very close to the kitchen and when I make coffee (Yes, both Grinder and Machine are noisy) he doesnt budge. And if he is awake, he comes up and has interest ;-)
He loves holding the roasted beans in the bags...
If you shield your kids from noise from birth, then yes, youll have issues as they wont be used to the noise later on .... simple logic really....
My 2 cents worth ;-)

Guest repliedRe: making Iberital Challenge quieter??
We have a 9 month old baby and she doesnt get worried about the grinder at all. It is funny when we have guests over and we offer to make coffee, they run to close the kitchen door so it doesnt wake the baby. She loves it though, seems to be like Fatboys baby comes looking for Dad when the coffee is being made to keep me company.Originally posted by st33p link=1180576817/0#5 date=1180664039its not me thats complaining.
Apparently my 3 yrs old always wakes up when I start the grinder
I am sure it is different once they are toddlers though so maybe this will be a good excuse for me to upgrade my grinder once my daughter comes into toddlerhood.
Just be careful how you attempt to deaden the noise that you dont do anything that will void the waranttee.

So far, we have been lucky.
Perhaps it is training.
Weve had the grinder since before ours was born. We didnt modify our routine too much when she was born.
The theory was that if we made things as quiet as possible for her to sleep, shed only be able to sleep with total silence.
We dont go out of our way to make noise, but just do our normal things. The net effect has been that she can sleep through a lot and doesnt wake up when the Rocky or the machine is in use.
Though, she certainly knows what it is. If shes awake when I make coffee, shell crawl into the kitchen to check up on me as soon as she hears the grinder.

Re: making Iberital Challenge quieter??
Sadly, the booth will be more expensive than the grinder. Saw one quoted at $6622.
Closing doors might be the best option.
