  • Upgrading from Iberital Challenge - need advice.

I currently have a Ibertial Challenge Grinder with doser and have had it for 14 years (I got it ex-demo back then).
I am going to upgrade as it now long in the tooth and needing 3/4 of its value in parts.

I am looking to upgrade to a flat burr grinder and wish to spend ideally under $500.
I am looking at the compak, macap and rocky.

I am wanting this next grinder to make as less mess as possible when grinding onto the portafilter.
I am not adverse picking up a secondhand unit if the price is right.
The rocky seems to pup up secondhand HEAPS more than other grinders?
    Is this a bad sign?

    Hey hormone1971,

All those grinders are very good, so no worries there. I personally would recommend the compak and macap over the rocky. I've had hands on experience with the compak and rocky, and i found the compak to be my preference. Mainly i find the rocky to be too slow in terms of gram/second speed, and also sometimes find the steps to big in the grind adjustment. Neither of these things should be deal breakers though if you find an unbeatable price. As many others on here would recommend, go see and test the grinders to know what suits you best.

My recommendation for low mess is to invest in a dosing funnel (OE Stainless Steel 58mm Dosing Funnel), they're worth every dollar.

    Cheers, Dave

Well if the Compak K3 push or Macap m2M is $450 new, will i get a better grinder for $550 ish? Such as the Macap M4?

I have found the Macap M4 for $550 new and is a great deal. My concern is my lack of volume means the doser grinder is a waste and I am better with a doserless? Or am I wrong thinking that?
I would still thing the M2M a good grinder just putting it out there.

One thing to consider is that doser grinders are well out of favour these day and as an example, we haven't sold a single one in about 18 months. They have very low resale value.

You may well be happier with an M2M or M2D.
