Anyone had this problem with the Smart Grinder Pro ?

    I didn’t know that the clacking problem some are having any my problem are related.
    It’s strange also because my grinder has had less than one full year of use.
    And the problem arose suddenly after I completely cleaned it out.

    Mine does not clack - but every now and then it kind of makes a clunk and moves like it got bumped.

    Now I’m wondering actually if the 800 grinder and the 820 have completely different impellers and the problem with mine might not be so related...

    The impeller in the 820 I have is made with a stainless steel shell, the one I see in the 800 is plastic with much longer pointed tips....

    Here's the worn impeller - see how, because the teeth are worn down, there is a caking of coffee on the inside of the chamber? That needs to be cleaned out:

    Cleaning out with vacuum and a toothpick to pick away at the caked stuff. Also ran a cotton bud back and forth through the grind outlet because you now have access to it:

    Several things:
    1. This was quite easy to do, despite the video looking technical.
    2. Watch the video. You need a long #2 Phillips Head screwdriver. The 25cm Stanley does the trick and the magnetic tip is helpful. This is the guy I bought from Bunnings: https://www.bunnings.com.au/stanley-...river_p6061791
    3. Before you do anything, wind your grind to the finest setting - this is important so you don't lose settings.
    4. Review, several times, the aspect of marking the cogs show you get your tooth alignment right.

    I just finished doing all of this, reassembled, and rediscovered what good grinds look and taste like.

    I have also ordered Ben's replacement impeller from here: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/BCG800X...Impeller/62905
    - Price came to US$38 or about A$53 - Much cheaper than buying a replacement grinder.

    Looking forward to installing the new impeller soon.

    I have made a video of what I’ve done which I should be able to upload soon.
    I removed both burrs and found there is two shim washers under the lower burr.
    I gave the drive shaft a pull and noticed a good amount of up-down movement.
    So it could be that the drive shaft is getting pushed up and staying up.
    I put it all back together without the two shim washers under the lower burr and also refitted the top burr at the most course end of its adjustment.
    I ran it empty and found that I could hear the burrs begin to rub together at the fine end of adjustment, around 10 I think. And they spun free above that.
    I haven’t had a chance to run some beans through it to check results yet.

    My 820 smart grinder pro is having this problem now.
    I just fully removed both burrs and cleaned it out with a brush and vacuum so it was like new, then reassembled it all back the way it was.
    It worked perfectly for a couple shots and then made a clunk clunk a couple times while grinding and slowed right down.
    The grind is now way too fine and takes forever.
    Adjusting the top burr back the notch 3 (back two spots from the finest setting) and setting the grind to 30, it is still grinding much the same, taking about 26 seconds to output 20 g of grinds.

    I pulled it all apart again and inspected the burrs - no signs of damage. Nothing was loose...

    Anyone have a clue what this problem is and how it may be fixed?

    I always use a vacuum to clean out grinders. Use a small brush on the burrs and cavities to agitate the coffee and the vacuum takes care of the rest.
    Just make sure you empty the vacuum asap because stale coffee after sitting in the dust canister for a few days doesn't smell that nice.

    Difficult to report on, this, Andy: they sent it back with an A4 sheet logging my problem and all relevant dates, together with three tiny snaplock bags - 1 saying '0', i saying '20' and the last saying '50'. Except that I have no idea what my own grind looked like. Anyway, I have, with lots of trials, found that it now works perfectly with settings of 14 for the grind size and 11.4 for the length of grind time. Not the same as originally; but I don't care ! I have a reliable shot to pull again, and I'm laughing.
    Could only wish for Breville to have provided me with something by way of information about what was wrong ...
