Wondering if any Sette 270 owners also have a Lido E and could comment on the output of quality between the 2 for espresso?

Due to space restrictions I've been using a Lido E for espresso for quite a while and am very happy with the results, although after hosting Xmas I've realised it's time to once again harness the power of electricity and don't want to take a step backwards in quality. The Sette ticks my conical, single dose / zero(low) grind retention boxes, just don't know about quality without using one.

    Thanks.

No issues with the display yet. My current 270W was replaced under warranty over 18 months ago.
The good news is that I get zero retention. I’ve heard other people lose a little bit, but my measurements show I get out what I put in.

So using it as a single dose grinder has worked well. I think just don’t get the W. Get the regular 270 and use it as a single dose grinder. Or even the Sette 30 AP.

I have one and it’s been going strong for over a year now! Great grinder only issue I could fault is it’s quite loud and my partner hates it lol

As much as I hate to say it I’m going to have to agree. Had the gear box in mine replaced under warranty a while ago and they threw in the Wi screen update but this morning after the first grind the LCD is dead, flashes on for a second then off for 10 seconds. Will have to make some time to open it up to see if I can get it going again but feel like it would be throwing good money after bad sending it to 5 Senses to have it looked at....
Anyone else had issues with the display?

Any experiences with an original Sette 270W?

I used to dose straight into my portafilter. Then I started having problems with the scale. It would not weigh partial grams. It would always truncate the value. E.g. if I wanted 18.2, 18.5 or 18.8 grams it would give me 18.
This value at least was consistent and accurate. I have cross checked this with another scale.

To solve this I started grinding into the provided cup. I reasoned that since the cup was much lighter than the 495g portafilter, the scale would more easily be able to register the 0.5 grams.
This worked. So I've been pseudo 'single dosing' for the last few months. The scale is again accurate the one-tenth of a gram. I have also cross checked this.

HOWEVER! Without the weight if the portafilter so absorb some vibrations, it seems that the minor adjustment ring will drift when I grind. I am holding it in place with duct tape.

I have a new grinder on the way, but any one else having similar problems? Its unfortunate since it's quite a decent grinder for the money otherwise.

    Thanks Mal!

The thing is, I would like to keep my options open, I want an espresso capable grinder that could also grind for V60.

Is Sette 270 up for the task? Or is there any other options?

Like I said, I prefer to single dose so that I can switch beans. With the review, sette 270 seems to tick all the boxes. Minimum retention, stepless micro adjustment, and capable for pretty consistent medium grind.

But.. Is it really the case in 'real life'?

As for the machine, the hassle and extra routines to produce milky drink makes me not considering manual espresso machine. Had some experience with rok, handpresso, and prismo (I know it's not comparable in term of espresso with flair).

    Welcome "romimuha"...

With such a tight budget, I'd be leaning towards getting a decent grinder in the $600-700 range and put the rest towards a Flair Espresso or other manual espresso device of similar quality. That way, as time goes on and you find yourself wanting to upgrade, you will already own a decent grinder and then grab a reasonable quality HX espresso machine down the track.

The Flair produces excellent espresso so long as you use great quality beans, freshly ground (with the decent grinder) immediately before pulling the shot. I've been using a Flair off and on now, for just over two years and I am very happy with the quality of pours it produces. It is not a toy...

    Mal.

    Hello everyone. Newbie here.

Planning to get decent grinder and entry level espresso machine (thinking about silvia, casa v, lelit anna or other 2nd hand higher quality machine).

Comfortable with total budget around $1000 (might add another 200-300 if REALLY necessary). No prior experience in operating an espresso machine but I know the basic theory and eager to put it into practice.

The thing is, apart from latte and espresso, I also brew with V60 or aeropress and I ALWAYS single dose (switching beans according to taste).

I know the best practice is to have separate grinder for espresso and manual brew, but I prefer to have only one. Been gathering infos about Sette 270 but still undecided.

Please enlighten me about my choice and options guys.

I use weight and time as a starting point to determine my grinder settings. For a double, I shoot for extract twice the weight of the coffee I put in the portafilter. For example, if I put 16g of coffee in the portafilter and stop the extraction at 32g. (I use a postal gram scale to do the weighing). I monitor the time to see that I’m close to 25-35 seconds when I stoped the extraction. Based on time and taste, I adjust the grind accordingly for the next shot. Of course you can vary from this to suite only taste but it’s good to measure stuff to reliably improve results and repeat. Just my thoughts.

G'day benny123. Straight out the box and even now still, the grind setting on my 270Wi has always been around 12D to 12G. Depends on the bean for sure. Haven't installed any shims or anything.

I tend to aim for around 60ml in 30 seconds as a starting point. I then tend to switch to grams in/grams out which is easy to manage with the weight based dosing of this grinder. I can't tell you the setting on the 270wi though as I think it tends to vary from grinder to grinder and whether shims have been installed or not. Also bean roast etc will make a fair difference. I think I'm on macro 6 or 7 personally.

Mine took a few weeks for the grind to settle it. I was gradually grinding finer until a ran off the end of the finest setting. Then I put both shims in (really needed only 1) and then was grinding out near the 12s.
Ah yep fair enough, I'll have a play with it and see what settings equal what. Actually today I'm purging through a bunch of beans, I'll test out what changes happen from say 13A to 12I
