We have been using the Sunbeam grinder for the last 18 months and have had the problem of needing to turn it finer and finer the longer weve had it... so we decided recently to upgrade. I thought Id mention what I found helpful in terms of looking for a new grinder, in case others are in the same boat:
At first I was mesmerised by Ebay, with all the excitement of thinking youre going to get a complete bargain-of-a-lifetime until someone jacks up the price by a hundred bucks at the last minute. But I came to realise that there are other problems with getting a new grinder in this way: 1) Postage costs 2) Sure it says "made in italy" - but how good is it really? 3) You cant test it out...
So in the end I gave up on the internet and searched the yellow pages for places that sold catering/cafe equipment - particularly places that service and sell coffee stuff secondhand. I found one place nearby that services and sells commercial grinders new and secondhand, so I went along to check it out: Turns out they put new burrs in all their secondhand grinders and you can have a play with them there with freshly roasted coffee beans - This leads to a lot more confidence than ebay. So I ended up going home with a Mazzer Super Jolly Automatic Grinder with new burrs and a new hopper, for $350 - cheaper than ebay, and with more certainty about what I was buying.
