    Macap M4D First Impressions

I'm inventing a Bluetooth grinder. You can operate it from your San Remo Opera tablet as you select that sweet spot for your Finca de Molino Café Absoluto Fabulosa.

hmm .. we seem to have gone OT haha

Agree with Chris that "tightening" on the rh worm adjuster makes the grind finer! And vice versa. perhaps we can agree on that!

Doesn't take away from the fact that this seems to be an excellent grinder!!

If you don't mind stepped adjustment, try a centipede drive, more steps

Seriously, I have been very pleasantly surprised with the improvement in shots. Not only that, it's dead easy to use with timed dose, maybe with a short top up to get the quantity perfect. Spot on 60ml double shots in 25secs, beautiful crema as well.

Macap M4D Chrome with Wega Mini Nova Classic

I received the package with the lovely new Macap M4D this morning just before my first job.

I did that came home and tried to dial it in but ran out of coffee...

I then had a meeting where it merged into a domestic commitment I couldn't miss which lasted most of the afternoon.

I finally then had time but no coffee so off to the dome to get some of their Espresso blend for $11.95.

I went through most of that trying to dial it in, and finally had my espresso. The grind still slightly too coarse but close enough. I didn't have the heart or the coffee to do any more today and I was dying for a coffee.

My impressions are very positive. First of all it is a lovely looking machine in Chrome and solid and heavy which I like. The design and build quality inspires some confidence, no doubt about it. It is quieter than the Rocky and sounds like it isn't working hard even though it is grinding at three times the speed, giving a double in a shade under 10 seconds.

Once dialled in, I would say LEAVE IT. If at the next CS meet someone wants to adjust the grind for a special basket or single shot, forget it, they bring their own grinder. I do like the worm drive, it is a sensible idea for fine adjustments.

I fiddled with the shot timing and got the shot timed to 9.75 seconds for the basket. It is just about right. I was playing with this while doing the grind as well. I like the way it works and it is nice having the timer, no doubt about it. It was one of the main reasons I got it.

Coffee quality, too early to tell. I suspect it will be hard to pick apart from the Rocky without side by side comparisons but we'll see. I may have a completely different impression in a day or two. I really haven't even got the perfect pour yet. I'm roasting some more Yirgecheffe at the moment so I will have some more coffee to play with.

Thanks to Paul from * **** Coffee for the grinder and Leaf Bean Machine in Bibra Lake for the espresso machine which is only two weeks old. I previously had the Rocky and Bezzera BZ40P for 11 years and both still are going strong but I am in the process of selling them.

It was the Rocky and Bezzera BZ40P that made me realize just how good all this Italian equipment is. It is built to last decades and it does. The Rocky still looks new and even the Bezzera built in 1996 still looks new unless you look very closely where some of the stainless has scratched slightly around the top tray where the cups are and on the drip tray.

The equipment will probably out last me. I'm up with the latest iPhone, Surface Pro 4 and all that but the World of Espresso is nicely low technology stuff that is made to last, a huge contrast. I need that.

I'm still getting used to the grinder. The fine adjustment takes time to get used to as it is just so fine. I put in a new bean of Yirgecheffe and found I had to make it two turns coarser. In fact I need to adjust it more coarse today so I just put in half a turn more for the next brew.

It really is fine in more ways than one!

The timer I love and I'm back to 10.00 seconds for a double. A timer, for me, is great.

Is it better than the Rocky? It obviously is a much more expensive machine, much faster and with a great timer, dosing system which I love.

The grind difference is hard to tell. One difference, and I may be wrong, is it seems to produce a grind which compacts more in the basket indicating maybe a different grind. The other, possibly quite subjective difference, is that the pour seems to progress from slow to fast towards the end. I gather this is what is expected but my recollection with the Rocky is that the pour is more even from start to finish. Flavour wise it would be impossible to compare, without a detailed side by side comparison.

It is lovely to use. Yup, not sorry about the money I spent on it. It looks great on the bench too.

Edit: some of these differences could be head gasket seals wearing in on the new Wega too.

I also got one of these based off recommendation from *****. stoked with it's performance, quiet, super clean, easy to use and program.

I find that varying the level in the hopper will result in a higher dose. It seems the weight of beans pushes more through in the same time. I imagine that this would affect grind too. I read that the Mazzer Robur which is a commercial conical grinder will change the grind and flavour profile with the level in the hopper. I think it is just physics at work. I haven't really noticed a difference in grind though but it may be there.

As far as mess, it isn't messier than any other grinder. It shoots straight into the basket.

                                This may not apply, but...

There is usually a small "Top-Hat" structure in the bean hopper, fixed above the throat of the grinding chamber, to control the height of the bean mass feeding into the grind chamber. This is intended to ensure that the weight of the beans above the grinding burrs remains essentially constant and therefore provides a consistent output. If you remove this Top-Hat, the consistency of grind will be effected...

                                Mal.
