Do you still have a turntable set up Mal?Originally posted by Dimal View PostHmmm...
The diamond Styli of the various cartridges used for playing my Vinyl Records only last about 1200-1500 Hrs before they need to be replaced, and Vinyl is way softer than the average coffee bean...

Well technically no, they would last for forever + infinity X 1,000,000,000 years. Please note this is just my estimation, if you buy the burrs on my say so and they are not still functioning as at the end of this time period my liability is limited to a complementary condolence beer...... I see he doesn't do the red speed burrs any more. Denis is onto some thing that sounds better, here is his reply to my email.Originally posted by kwantfm View PostI have the conical with Red Speed burrs. It's wonderful.
I no longer offer Red Speeds as option due to quality problems with burrs. The steel burrs I ship conicals with are really top notch. I have shipped some with Compak Red Speed burrs but those were really inconsistent with high reject rate due to dings/dents, out of round burrs, out of size burrs etc. They work well when they work, but they are way too expensive at $350 and I could not return them back to supplier when I find these burrs which don't perform well.
Problem is that Red Speed, Lucidate coating just like TiN coating is applied at high temperatures 700F-800F. For that you need heat treated steel. If you do not have heat treated steel then burr may deform, change dimensionally and steel will get softer. Production process for conical burrs does not allow them to use the heat treated steel (they can do that for flat burrs but not for conicals) so they coat them and I assume somebody checks them and ships them. However I received lot of them out of spec, some are so deformed they don't even fit burr carrier...
So I am working on my own option. There is a special DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating that is applied at relatively low temperatures, i.e. the temperatures that will not affect this steel. Its coating used on medical implants, surgical instruments, cutting tools etc. Its harder coating than Red Speed or TiN. There are only 2-3 facilities in US that can do this special process (standard DLC process is also applied at 700-800F). I am working with one of them and I am currently testing those burrs and they work great. If I am happy with them I am going to offer it as an option and it will be cheaper than Red Speeds, I expect price to be between $250-$300 I am trying for $250 so its $100 cheaper than Red Speed.

Probably these things for me tip it in the favour of the Flat:Originally posted by BalthazarG View Postdeity6667, I'd be curious to know exactly why you prefer the flat? I know someone already asked you this question above, but I couldn't find a specific answer in your explanation.
Taste: Yes subjective - i prefer the taste of the flat - but it does require more considered preparation.
RPM adjustment: this is awesome - being able to change flow rate using RPM instead of dose or grind fineness is pretty useful.
if i wasn't clear before - if i could only have one it would be the conical - but as i have both, i choose the flat between them. The conical is the predicable workhorse - the flat is what i use when i'm in the mood for fun.
both share the same great build quality, consistency and repeatability when changing grind settings (say going from FP to espresso is no problem and doesn't require flushing old grinds) very negligible grind retention, single dosing!!, very very quiet (as far a grinders go).
