Another "What Grinder To Go With .... " Thread (La Pavoni)

Hi guys,

First time poster!

I have just purchased myself a La Pavoni Romantica GRL. I've been making coffee at home for about the last 10 years using my parents machines (most of which have been automatic grind etc). In the past year on my tight budget I purchased a crappy breville and separate grinder (5 settings) second hand. Now I want to get back into making coffee properly.

I purchased the La Pavoni for my espresso first thing in the morning and usually a latte or 2 throughout the day. However I was stupid enough not to purchase a grinder at the same time.

My budget is already stretched leaving me about $200-$300. The La Pavoni should arrive by the weekend and I really want to have a grinder to accompany it.

I kind of have 3 choices in this circumstance.

1) Keep the crappy grinder for the next month or two which will probably kill me and leave me drinking bad espresso. After which buy a Rancilio Rocky or something similar

2) Purchase a mediocre grinder (Noting Breville "The Smart Grinder Pro") then upgrade around Christmas time

3) Wait a week or two and purchase a Iberital Challenge to keep for the next year or so.

Any suggestions/ideas would be much appreciated.

How about a Lido from Talk Coffee?

It's a manual grinder but very high quality. Can double as an "away" grinder for when great coffee is needed but not available...

Lido stock Australia wide is currently limited to a few remaining Lido 2 while Doug and Barb move production to new digs.

My gut feel is that we're a month or so off on stocks of 3, E and E-T

Second hand Rocky for about 2 hunge.

I'm using a Rocky with a La Pavoni Stradivari at the moment, does a good job, keep an eye on the Coffee Snobs for sale forum, they come up from time to time at a reasonable price.

If you decide to take the Breville option, you could look at the 600SIL which is the same as the Smart Grinder , but with a simple rotary timer knob. It's cheaper than the SG Pro, and there is less to go wrong.

I managed to find a Rocky on Gumtree for $260 including postage, fingers crossed it gets here before the weekend.

My La Pavoni had an attempted delivery today (though the courier company didn't even attempt, just left a card). So fingers crossed I get my hands on it tomorrow, then I'm hoping the Rocky will be here by Friday.

I wouldn't call the Breville Smart Grinder mediocre.
For a domestic machine needed to grind 3 shots a day It's a pretty good value.
And if you can still get it for $200 then it's not a bad buy.
I had one that was used for my La Pavoni and it ground well and gave me no trouble until more than 4 and a half years elapsed. The reality is that it's a kitchen appliance and will not last as long as a more expensive machine, but while mine was working it produced a decent product all the time.

I have a Rocky but have ordered an M4D but mainly for the automation which is handy.

The Rocky I have owned for 11 years. It is a fantastic grinder. I have the doserless model. I can't say enough good things about it. I think $260 is a great price. I worked out that in 11 years, mine has done probably 80kg of beans and the burrs are rated for about 600kg. These grinders used in a home setting will last for decades.
